That's about right - a page is roughly 2 minutes of stage time on average.

Is this the Methuen edition? Many of these slim play voumes are priced so that they can double as a programme for the original production, and I think I'm right in saying this was the programme book for the first production at the RSC The Other Place, Stratford, in 2001. As such, it would have been priced at less than a fiver in the theatre and later shop sales at full price would subsidise the loss accrued in using the playscript as a programme book.

I have seen this practice in operation at the National Theatre, the Abbey Theatre and several other places as well as the RSC, and it almost invariably occurs with NEW plays only. I've never been entirely persuaded of the economics of it but presumably it is done to ensure that as many new plays as possible get a published edition in a market where plays are never bestsellers. But I think I'd rather have a proper programme, with the playscript as an optional extra purchase.

Also, like children's clothes, books are rarely cheaper just because they are smaller.

Martin wrote all seven (??) of his plays in one burst of creativity in 1994 and has never written another word since, apart from alterations to those. They have all been produced in London except The Banshees Of Inisheer which has never had a production and which Martin apparently doesn't rate. I think he's going to concentrate on movies for a while before deciding if he ever wants to write another play. So, it looks like we'll have to wait for the revivals.

............and is, I believe, the oldest Broadway theatre still standing. Whenever all that restoration scaffolding shit comes down the Lyceum will be once again revealed as the beauty it really is.

This is, incidentally, where Liza Minnelli's recently restored Liza With A Z TV special was filmed live in 1972. It was directed by Bob Fosse, who that year won the Triple Crown of Oscar (Cabaret), Tony (Pippin) and Emmy (Liza With A Z)

BTW, in this week's NEW YORKER (cover date Mar 6 - "Next Stop Iran" issue) there is an illuminating article/interview with Martin, written by Fintan O'Toole, one of Ireland's best cultural commentators. This is the first major print article I've seen in which Martin explicitly talks about the influence the Clash and the Pogues had on his work.

i picked up that new yorker coincidentally because i was flying out to a joe strummer tribute night type thing in ohio, and was reading it on the cab on the way to laguardia and it was interesting, new yorker profiles are always really good, then i got to the clash/pogues part, and kinda felt like it was a weird sign that i was kinda on the right track...(god that sounds cheesy, apologies) but anyway, it's cool that the music situation for the play worked out since martin obviously sees the pogues as such a huge influence, in the blending of irish and popular culture...i guess you would put it

but anyway, i'm not sure if this was answered already, but does anyone know how long the run of the play is, i have a friend who really wants to go with me, but she's in the middle of moving and we probably wont get to go for a week or so...

Hard to say, Karen. It's technically an open-ended run, so in theory it could run longer than Cats. In practice, however, it won none of its 5 Tony nominations and has had fairly average box office since it moved to Broadway. My best guess is see it within the next 4 weeks. There's always a post-Tonys/pre-Summer clearout on Broadway, so that theatres can become available for the Autumn Season. And usually, only the very strong survive the purge. Keep an eye on Playbill.com
