Glued Up And Speeding & Hot Dogs With Everything

Post Fri Jun 13, 2008 11:49 am

Hi Spider

Have bought the new box set and got to hear "Glued Up and Speeding" and "Hot Dogs With Everything" for the first time. Thought they were brilliant and reckoned they were the closest I would ever get to hearing what the Millwall Chainsaws might have sounded like in the late 70s considering nothing was ever committed to record. Philip thought that "Glued Up and Speeding" may have been and old Millwall Chainsaws number that you wrote, is this true? Loved your lead vocals and Shane's backing vocals "la la la la la" on "Hot Dogs With Everything."

Anyway I was thinking what with the Nips getting back together, how about a getting the Millwall Chainsaws back together and doing a double header! Cheers for taking the time to sign my book and say hello down in Brighton a few months ago, I reckon the Millwall Chainsawas gig would be slightly different in terms of musical output.

Reading the sleeve notes of the new box set you mention that "Broad Majestic Shannon" is right up there as a song that really shows all the qualities of a great Pogues track. Its funny I always thought it was good but not a stand out track but have given it a few listens again and know what you mean. "Rainy Night In Soho" is absolute top quality though probably my favourite track.

If push comes to shove what are your favourite other Pogues tracks......? I am sure you get bored with crap questions like this but hey its Friday,I am not at work and I am sat on my arse listening to some new Pogues tunes which is pretty damm cool.

Murder Ska is top as well.

Cheers

Charlie,

Actually Hot Dogs With Everything is an old Nips song.

Where did you find the info that it’s originally a Nips song? The Lost Decade only mentions it in connection with the Pogues and Spider's initial reluctancy to sing it: Afterwards they attempted 'Hot Dogs With Everything', a less than cultured trip around Soho. "I can't sing that!" screeched Spider on reading Shane's scrawled lyrics. Eventually he did, and Stacy's Chainsaw schooling Had never served him better. "It was a good laugh," he smiles. "I'm not keen on recording because, apart from everything else, I'm always the last one to do anything, so I just have to sit around the studio; but I really enjoyed doing 'Hot Dogs'."

I think I read somewhere that 'Hot Dogs With Everything' was one of the name suggestions when starting the Pogues (Pogue Mahone). The name could have come from a Nips song but I´ve never heard of it.

All the same, it is my understanding that "Glued Up" is a M. Chainsaws song and "Hot Dogs" is a Nips tune. When we began writing and recording our Sid And Nancy soundtrack bits at Elephant Studios, it quickly became apparent there would be at least some punk element to the score. To this end, it seemed like a good opportunity to pay tribute to two of the Pogues' seminal components and, to this end, Spider and Shane both contributed from their back catalogues. It's true however that Spider was initially reluctant to sing "I've been walking 'round the National Gallery/Wanking over pictures of Saint Sebastian".................

It is credible that "Hot Dogs" is an OLD MacGowan song, as we did it in the studio fully formed, as one would a cover version. There was no laborious methodology of guide vocals, lyrical rewrites etc....The guitar solo is by Shane, incidentally.

i must say i have no recollection of any reluctance on my part to sing that bit and i can't imagine why there would have been. coincidently, this morning we were talking about derek jarman's caravaggio & sebastiane both of which i went to see with shane. then i thought of using those very lines as a tag for the myspace page. unfortunately i think there's too many letters. see you at jh, phil. oh yeah, and glued up..is an old millwall chainsaws song.

I hacked it into the "Others" page at: http://www.pogues.com/Misc/others.shtml
That page is linked to from the bottom of every page on Medusa, and that's where the gathered links to other places are, and where I assumed you were talking about wanting a link. It is now prominently displayed as the first link. The thread that Zuzana pointed to was my just following up on our original conversation to let you know I had done it. If you had something else in mind, OK. I encourage you to contact me directly (dzm@dzm.com) so we can talk about what you would like to see. We'll figure out something that works for both of us.

Regarding the links above - the forum software doesn't recognize the URLs unless they have the "http://" in front of them. We've fixed them here.

The excellent Poguetry.com site has lyrics to Hot Dogs with Everything:

Hot Dogs with Everything

They left me out of there this morning
This was a kiss off from a cop
They smashed the pills right up in front of me
When they got me out the pub
Driving through the old West End

Well I was looking at the colors in the city lights
Laughing in the back out of fuckin' delight
Get out a fag and I'll give you a light ---blaaaahh

Chorus:
Hot dogs with everything, everything, everything (2x)

I've been walking around the National Gallery
Wanking on the pictures of St. Sebastian
I've been playing the computer games
Down in the Playland where no one can hear you scream
Got a fuck off a little yob
Got a fix off a pick up job

I was down on the ground in a stinking pub
Giving head to a fat old slob
Throwing up with his cock in my gob ... blaaaahh

Hot dogs with everything, everything, everything (2x)
Fuck you
We mean it man

Hung around with some sluts I know
Down St. Martin's School of Art
Took an amp and a couple of blues
And nearly blew my head apart
Dropped my trousers and did the job
In Soho market in the lady's bog

Looking at the colors in the city lights
Green and red in a cold blue light
Got a fag and I'll give you a light ... blaaaaah

Hot dogs with everything, everything, everything (repeated)
Fuck You... Boring Sidney
You wanna die, you die
Eagles may soar, but weasels don't get sucked into jet engines.
