Spider on the Uillean pipes

Post Mon Jul 03, 2006 1:24 pm

Has Mr Stacey ever dabbled with the idea of playing them, as one does ?

I bet the question has been raised a million times after people heard the instrumental break in D. O. T.

It's amazing what you can get from 6 holes and a sweaty armpit

Well, an uilleann pipe un-keyed chanter has got 8 holes.... but 7 notes (unless you go into the 2nd octave, then its 14)

I was once "forced" to give the uileann pipes a try by the owner of a hostel on Achill Island. It sounded like a dying animal. Which obviously is not one of the nicest sounds around ...

Actually 9 holes, if you count the bottom D hole at the bottom of the chanter which is opened and closed on the knee and actually 8 notes if you factor in the Cnat note that can be obtained without a "key" like on a tin whistle.
