Microphones for whistles.

Post Thu Apr 27, 2006 10:08 pm

Excuse me Spider if you've already answered this one-
Could you recommend a brand or style of clip-on or bug microphone for whistles? I'm not sure if they're a great idea, but I kinda want the mobility of NOT being glued to 1 inch away from the mike, with it picking up every single fecking breath up my huge schnozz.
Clip on and wireless would be the go; expense is always a worry but no permanent obstacle, so any brilliant suggestions?
I'm only playing Susatos, so if necessary I can drill into the ABS to install bug mikes. Thanking you in advance, go raibh céad míle maith agat.

This is something our band had a problem with as well. In the end we took a mic that could handle high tones. Shure and Sennheiser are the best mostly but I wonder what Spider uses as well

Someone in a band I know uses a radio mike with an earpiece.

Hi Heather. If you get a chance, could you find out for me any details as to brand, type, specifications, etc. It would be much appreciated. :)

If I get the chance, but don't see them around as much as I used to, bit of a long story.

In my limited experience with seeing Spider play, he uses the same mic he uses for vocals and is (as you put it) glued 1" away from a stationary stand.

:) Cheers Boss, yeah, I've noticed that too. But given his role as singer as well, it makes sense for him to double up on the one mike. I don't play much whistle during songs I sing as such - I tend to play tunes in sets as a break for the punters from the sound of my voice  - and I just want some mobility. I'm pretty sure that such bug/clip mikes are available for wind instruments, I just havnae a clue where to start looking, and thought Spider may. :)

The Shure SM-58 or SM-57 will work for this. I always use the Shure SM-58 for my gigs. The AKG C-1000-S (made in Austria) also can do well for whistle, although it's not a great vocal mic and it's a condensor mic so keep the wind from your schnozz away from that mic. You can also use a Stedman Proscreen XL for that problem, especially in the studio.

:) Thanks Behan. Yeah I have a couple of SM-57 copies that are fine, I just really wanna go portable on this thing, so buds would be better, except for the size factor (-a smaller mike struggling to get the same sound quality-). Hmmmmm, maybe I should check out some Ian Anderson/Jethro Tull sites.

There are a few very good wireless Lavalier Mics (the tie-clip mic) out there Fintan. I used one for a small accordion I was playing in a band in the early 90's. Just go to your music store and have a look at the wireless lavalier mics and figure out how you can attach it to the fipple part of your whistle. I've seen flute players do this. They run all around stage unwired, yet playing. If you could get the whistle to do that, let me know. That would be Total FREEDOM!

Fintan, if you drill into your whistle it will destoy the tone. At least i would imagine it would...Anyway, I've never used any kind of clip on , just my vocal mic. I like staying in one place. and anyway, there's enough gaps for me to have a wander around should i get a bit bored.

Thanks Spider, yeah I know re: the drilling thing. There are some bud mikes out there, apparently, that require being mounted via a small hole, which would have to be caulked up after installing the mike, I'd imagine. Sounds like too much palaver to me, so....
Cheers again for the reply. Roger, wilco, over and out. :)

I got It!!!

Place one of those clip mics on your Schnozz. The most perfect place, because wherever the whistle is being played, your schnozz will be right above
