Personally, I have always felt Hells Ditch to be underrated. I think Shane came up with some really strong songs and Joe did a great job. As has been well documented, he had a really tough job getting a vocal performance out of Shane but I don't think any of us were in any great hurry to get it finished. After all it was summer, it was the World Cup and we were in a particularly beautiful part of Wales. I hired a pushbike to get to the nearest pub, which was three miles away...

Thanks again Spider. Maybe I'm just focusing too much on the rough edges of Shane's performance. A few of the songs are just so good that I want them to be more crisp, like in the earlier work. Lorca is a fantastic song, and listening to it, I want it to just be bigger and fuller, but who knows, if it were then maybe it wouldn't be as great. Anyway, thanks for expanding on your original statement.

So, who pushed you back from the pub?

Unfortunately, or maybe not, I managed to fall off the bike (one of those insane racing machines that weigh less than a feather) at a roundabout just 50 yards from the pub. It might have been something to do with the water bottle full of tequila and grapefruit juice that i had been sucking down for the previous three miles. Anyway, i rear-ended a couple of old aged pensioners in a Maestro who in the confusion seemed to think it was their fault. Charlie MacLennan, our old stage manager, came and picked me up from the pub and that was the end of that.
