Nickel or Brass whistle?

Post Fri Jan 12, 2007 6:53 pm

Hello!

Well, my daughter's been practicing on her cheap whistle for a while, so for her birthday i'm gonna get her a BETTER cheap whistle, a Feadog, as that's what ya'll reccomend here in discussion. And a lovely green one should make her happy. But i'm just wondering, what's the difference between brass & nickel? Does one sound better, louder, more in tune, etc?

cheers!

I always think that the Nickel sound better.

I don't know if it actually does, it's just a personal thing.

... and i see there's some nice composite (ie: plastic) ones out there too.

well, she got a nickle one on may 1. maybe wood or plastic next year. we also got her a month of lessons from the talented allison jenkins, of local bands the flying folk army and zeelia.

a while back she came out of her room playing some song on the whislte she knew she knew, but couldn't place. i recognized it right off, it was guns of navarone, by the skatalites (albeit in the key of d). what's really wild about that is it hadn't been on the stereo in a couple of months, but had been working away in her subconsious, and then just popped out one morning. so we firgured she deserved some lessons to get better, before she goes to a one week fiddle camp, where she'll also be able to do some whistle classes.

meanwhile, i'm struggling to squeak out spancill hill... wish i was young and smart again.

Wasn't it The Upsetters rather than the Skatalites?

If I were less lazy I could just look that up of course...

EDIT: I looked it up - you're right, I'm wrong.

I'll shut up now.
