Hal Willner’s Rogues Gallery in Special UK & Ireland Shows

Post Thu Jul 10, 2008 7:44 pm

Lou Reed, Pete Doherty & Others Bring Hal Willner’s Rogues Gallery to Life in Special Shows
Full URL
While working on the Pirates of the Carribean films, director Gore Verbinski and his star Johnny Depp became fascinated with the lore and fable of the pirates and sailors who ran the high seas before the days of upright tray-tables and airsick bags. Not too far behind was Hal Willner, who quickly joined into the mix, dragging a very impressive list of musicians to create what we now know as Rogue’s Gallery: Pirate Ballads, Sea Songs and Chanteys.

What most people don’t know yet is that London, Dublin and Gateshead will be the venues for these songs to be performed live for the first time, as they will take us on a trip like no other, exploring the hardships, the horrors, the lusts and lurid depths, and the crystal beauty that led men to the sea in ships for hundreds of years. Artists such as Lou Reed, Pete Doherty, Robyn Hitchcock and Tim Robbins, among dozens of others, will help bring these tales to life.

The dates:
July 18 - Analog Festival, Dublin
July 24 -The Sage, Gateshead
July 28 - Barbican, London

The band:
Kate St John (Musical Director)
Leo Abrahams (guitar)
Andy Newmark (drums)
Dudley Phillips (bass)
David Coulter (musical saw)
Martyn Barker (percussion)

Featuring (in no particular order):
Lou Reed-Dublin
Martha Wainwright- London
Pete Doherty- London
Robyn Hitchcock -London , Gateshead
Ralph Steadman- London
Shane MacGowan - All three shows
Neil Hannon - London , Dublin
Chris Difford - All three shows
Kathryn Williams - Gateshead
Tymon Dogg- Gateshead
Ed Harcourt - London
Rachel & Becky Unthank - Dublin and Gateshead

Plus the below, still to be determined on which shows:
Tim Robbins
Richard Strange
Teddy & Kami Thompson
Jenni Muldaur
Gavin Friday
Three Pruned Men
the Langley Sisters
Eliza and Martin Carthy
Norma Waterson
David Thomas
Baby Gramps
White Magic
Sandy Dillon
Julie Fowlis

I was just going to post this. I wish I was going to see this. I liked that album but felt that Shane and Tom Waits were missing from that album bigtime!

Arrgh, why does the London show have to be on the same date at the Tom Waits gig in Edinburgh which I have tickets for????? I enjoyed the album.

Mrs Smoz and friends have tickets for the Barbican so I will hear all about it when I get back from Scotland.

Brilliant pictures, Caroline!! Real joy to browse (as well as your other galleries at Flickr). And the Shane pic you use as highlight is, well, a truly perfect highlight. :) Thanks for posting!

Shane on BBC Radio 4 Today programme

Post Wed Jul 23, 2008 9:39 am

There was a short report on the BBC Radio 4 Today programme this morning (Weds 23 July) on the "Rogues' Gallery" sea shanties and pirate songs project, featuring Shane MacGowan, Lou Reed, The Lovely Rachel Unthank, and many other stars. Oh, and Bono.

It's currently available on BBC iplayer "listen again". It's about 1 hour 40 mins into the programme, broadcast at about 0740 BST. Shane features briefly at the end of the report.

Edited to update link. Now (24.07.09) at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/today/hi/today/ne ... 520744.stm

(Scroll down to 0740)

What songs did Shane sing? Greenland Whale Fisheries is on the Rogues Gallery album (a version by Van Dyke Parkes).

I was all caught up in taking pictures so I couldn't pay much attention to the music, I'm afraid. I think Shane's last tune with Lou Reed and Tim Robbins (the actor) was 'The Leaving of Liverpool'. I could be wrong.
