That was more of a question, based on facts I read over the past few months/years. I never saw the man in action. Never got the chance to. That's why I never made any affirmation. I wanted to know the opinion of objective people who got the chance to see him. Because on many pictures, he looks like he's dead. But again, this is only pictures and I know that I can't build up an accurate opinion based on them. So i posted this topic.

after reading through several threads i noticed people had some anomisity towards shane about canceling gigs ang questioning wheather or not he is actually sick which gets me to the the topic of this thread, is shane still great?? and i firmly believe the answer is YES, shane is a 100% orginal and we will never see another shane macgowan in our lives. this man has lived a lifestyle that most will disagree with but it is not up to us to judge him, shane has given us many timeless classics such as a raniny night in soho, if i should fall from grace with god, has expresses his opinions in areas of irish nationalism and has walked his own line since day one not giving a fuck what people think of him this makes shane macgowan a true hero and trailblazer so lets all forgive him for cancling a show and move on there is still japan and Guilfest to look foward to for the lucky ones that will get to be there so to you i say sing loud and sing proud and not let the world forget about shane macgowan.

Shane is without a doubt unique. A poet, writer, performer and singer without comparison.
But in all honesty, you can't define great as being stood in front of the same old band, singing the same old songs for twenty odd years.
When you can put live cds on and not be able to tell the difference between them, even though they were recorded ten years apart, that's not great, that's stale and predictable.
So, maybe his not turning up is shane's way of introducing a bit of uncertainty, unpredictability, who knows?
And no, I don't believe any of that 'unreliable genius' nonsense, a no show is a no show, no matter how you try to dress it up.
Shane's management should have been issuing him regular kicks up the backside in order to get him to produce some new stuff, or at least do some new arrangements of the old stuff, perhaps they do, did, who knows?
He has the capability to be great, if he can be arsed that is

Let those who are without sin cast the first stone - or something like that.

I may have sounded off in frustration at the odd no show but one gets over it.

Lot's of geniuses (genii?) are unreliable and are quite often not nice guys some of the time - George Best, Eric Cantona, Jackie Wilson, Wilson Pickett, Lee "Scratch" Perry & Paul Kossoff are among my favourites but you probably wouldn't want to philosophise with them (well maybe with Eric).

You would, on the other hand, have a hell of a night on the lash with them.

Hell, he's already lasted far longer than expected. Clearly, the man's made of stronger stuff than most - I'd say he's going to go the distance.
