The Snake or Crock of Gold?

Post Tue Jan 11, 2005 8:19 pm

Just wondering, which one of those two albums is the best in your view? If you could tell me why also, that would be appreciated. Thanks!

Crock of Gold is by far the better album - it's much more like the classic Pogues we know and love. Shane's writing is back on top form and there's some really witty lyrics and a fair bit of politics and social commentary.

The Snake has some good songs on it but IMO, there's way too much filler and it lacks cohesion. The two incredibly sappy duets are torture on my ears and Shane seems particularly whiny and filled with self pity...

I agree with the previous speaker.
Allthough im not very fond of Shane's vocals during that period of time (sounds like he got a flue) The crock of gold is a very good album.
The album got a very nice layed back traditional sound to it.

The snake is a bit more rock'n'roll.

By the way.. Have any of you guys read "The crock of gold" by James Stephens?
Besides from the album being named after it it's a really great book. Fun and poetic folklore.

Weren't a lot of the songs on The Snake actually rejected Pogues tracks? I thought that the electric guitars sounded out of place too...

I love them both, but true, they are very different.
It was on the 23rd of June
As I lay blasted in my room
A small bird sang on an ivy branch
And the song they sang was the "Jug of Punch"

too many electric guitars and sappy duets on the snake but there are still a couple og good ones.
crock of gold is far a classic shane album.a breath of fresh air at the time ,more like the original pogues ,i had it playing continuous for a bout 6 months when it came out

I agree with everyone above. Crock is over all much better, but The Snake has some amazing songs too. In fact "The Snake with Eyes of Garnet" is one of my overall favorites.

Sappy duets?! I think the way Máire and Sinéad sing on their sweetest, while Shane does his best to spoil the sweetness and to mock them as well as himself is brilliant. Fun, parody on all those crappy saccharine pop duets, that’s how I perceive the songs. And enjoy them immensely. :)

Never picked up on that. Seems to me that Shane genuinely is trying to be romantic and coming out with a song that sounds like something Robbie Williams (after 40 a day for twenty years) would sing with Kylie or Nicole Kidman...

Actually, now you come to mention it and listening again tonight - it *does* sound like an old, drunk, homeless guy singing a love song to an underage girl. Not sure if it's intentional, but if Shane meant it like that, then it's fucking hilarious.

I think The Snake has far better songs on it. I also like the stripped down sound on the album. No accordion or fiddles, just mainly banjo and whistle. I also like the mix between rock songs and folk songs.

I think the songs and the sound on "Crock" is tired and dozy. Some songs are good but it just sounds a bit boring to me.
