A man has been sentenced to three years imprisonment for beating up Irish punk rocker Shane MacGowan, although confusion surrounds the motives for the attack.

Liam McInerney, 23 from London, kicked and beat up MacGowan at a pub in the city's Belgravia region last year. He claims he became angry at the singer, after MacGowan offered him money for sex in the pub's toilets.

His defence team told the court that the reaction was "wholly wrong", but suggested he was "not the only man who would find it sexually threatening to be approached in the way he was by Mr MacGowan".

"To some degree it was an attempt to remove himself from the situation," his lawyers said.

The scaffolder claimed that he had been in the pub toilets when MacGowan came in and put his arms around him, offering him money.

MacGowan, former singer of The Pogues, was not present in Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court, but has previously claimed there was no motivation in the attack.

As for Shane's appearance, well he doesn't really conform to the campy stereotypes that so many gays seek to conform to, does he?

It would probably be a good thing for the gay community if he was to 'come out' - to show that they don't ALL have to act 'flamboyant' to be comfortable with their sexuality.

I'm not really bothered if Shane is gay, straight or bi - his music is fantastic and that's all that matters to me.

All I have to say is that if he *is* homosexual, then he's done a very good job of avoiding being 'outed' in his 20-or-so years of fame (usually there are plenty of exes who are willing to dish the dirt to the papers).

It would also suggest that Victoria has been happily acting as his 'fruit fly' for the past decade-and-a-half...

It's an awfully large presumption to jump from the information in that article to "Shane offered him money to fuck him (Shane) in the ass."

Assuming that the statement about solicitation is true, I'd guess that most johns prefer that the prostitute be on the receiving end.

Regardless, this is clearly a case of "he said, he said." The only thing known for certain is that young Mr. McInerney assualted Mr. MacGowan in the pub's toilets. What led to the attack is clearly open to debate since the only two participants have provided conflicting information. For anyone of us to speculate on it is beyond silly since we have no more information than the conflicting stories.

Regardless, who actually cares? At the end of things it doesn't matter what Shane's sexual preferences are. The proper response for an unwelcome solicitation is to walk away, not assault the john with a bar.

complete crap, it was all the defendent could come up with to 'justify' his actions. Shane was the third person (the previous victim was a woman, also a vitual stranger) the scaffolder had put in hospital in the last few months with vicious beatings.
