He would still write beautiful music. He would still be a great (and probably less erratic) performer... BUT... I still think he'd lose that certain something that makes him Shane. It's not about the cliche of the drunken Irish 'artist', it's about drinking and smoking being part of the personality that makes Shane who he is.

I've always been curious to know
how shane would sound/write
when sober
is his genious 100% drug fuelled?
or is there some remnant of real thought deep down?
if shane went sober and turned into a tosser
then yeah he'd lose something
even though it's sad to "lose" a part of yourself when giving up booze
it still might be the truth in Shane's case
i can't stake a claim either way though
havent heard any of his sober work because it doesn't exist

Hi!!
i definetely think that he is a genius (drunk or not) i do not like to see him sick, i preffer the macgowan from 1978-88. really i do not like to see drunk to anybody
I hate people who likes laughing of samebody when is drunk because
"is funny".
The alcohol or drugs help people to express things and feelings, and i think that Shane is one of those people, but he has these feelings and songs inside of him, alcohol only help to flow them out, on the other hand if you need alcohol or drugs in your normal life it is a problem and you need help, no laughs and hurras!!

I would like to think he wouldn't. I, for one, think I would enjoy the show as much if not more if he were always sober and "spot on." There is something magical, however, about never knowing what's going to happen and then (as the case in both Avalon shows this year,) seeing Mac kick the shit out of the whole setlist.

Was it? I got something about Sinead O'Conner and cops. The rest was just too much effort to wade through. What did he say?

That certain "something" might be his life. I do not have a medical background, however it is my understanding that Shane may be to the point where if he were to quit drinking his liver would develope scar tissue to the point that if he ever started drinking again he would perish very quickly. It appears that his body has adjusted to his current rate of consumption and may be at a "steady state" condition.
Does anyone have a medical background that can expound on this truth or falsehood?
To answer your question, my opinion is that the certain "something" is genius which would rear its head no matter Shane's taste for alcohol or tobacco.

Would Sinead O'Conner lose that certain "something" that she has if she were to quit messing with cops and shopping best friends!?
Or something like that, not sure about
certain something and if she has
it. But she must be really busy reporting everyone with drinking/smoking habit.

i dont think he wiould lose anything in the eyes of proper fans, but he draws people who only want to see how messed up he is. Perhaps if he did quit he would lose them
