How can a song writer of Shane MacGowan's skill justify singing about raping women(Rock 'n' roll Paddy) and lynching niggers and whipping that bitch(Truck driving man). Was he having an Enimen phase?

I think the point is that if a writer is as great as macgowan he or she can justify writing about anything. Whilst ethics can be served by art morality is its enemy.

"Ah! Morality... the last bastion... of a coward. "
I suppose you watch movies, Kurwa? And I suppose you understand that bastards playing actors are not so bad in real life. well at least they do not kill people in such quantities as at the wide screen. So if you feel the difference between actors and their roles why to mix author with his heros? Author who writes about raping is not necessary a rapist himself. As well as writing about something doesn't necessary mean supporting this something. Sometimes quite opposite ... Shite i feel like i am explaining obvious things to a kid. You are not a kid, Kurwa, are you?
Nice nick BTW...

I can certainly understand it when the songs seem to clearly be in character such as in Truck Driving Man, but I do cringe when I hear some of the things like when on a few occasions he sings about Jews in a negative light which seems to come out of the blue. To contrast this with Shane not wanting to sing the verse in Thousands are Sailing about being "refugees from fear of priests" where Mr. Chevron said, "I think, essentially, Shane felt 'Why bring The Priests into it? And so late in the song too?' " To have a problem with that and be willing to throw an offhanded derogatory reference to a class of people at the end of another song is a bit disturbing.

poetic expression, philosophies, attitude and view of loife, beeing stuck in chains of rules that "normal" society considers "normal"; not everything is what it seems to be; the people presenting themselves and situations presenting themselves as "this and this" are very often "that and that"... unreavealling rotten stuff!
RNR Paddy is one of me favourites... but ya have to understand the song and the poet in the roight way! MacRua speaks wise.

I can except this, more or less; but then he needs a stern talking to about not wanting to sing Thousands are Sailing as it was written.

I thought his only issue with ‘Thousands’ was Brendan Beehan dancing in the street in New York? Didn’t he say he thought Beehan wouldn’t do that so he changed to words when he sang the song live?

The vigilant fans are saying nothing, they're still speechless after hearing about Tommy Makem's conspiracy theory. I was stuck for words meself when I heard it
