I have just been browsing on HMV's website and there is a DVD shown there under Shane's name. "Montreaux 1995." It is saying that it is not Scheduled for release until 22/11/04. Has any one heard anything?

Why do everyone say that The Popes sounded better before? I think both Mr MacGowan and The Popes sound way much better then they did '95.
Brian Kelly is a great addition to the band that beats any accordion or fiddle. IMHO!

I've seen this concert. Your versions are probably going to be with better picture/sound. But i wasn't utterly impressed by it. It's ok, no more no less.

Howcome Shane is in better shape now by the way? Is he cutting down drinking?
Saw him in Glasgow in January and he was awesome. And he was good on the "across the broad atlantic" record too.. yeah.

I think that without traditional instruments their music has lost its Irish specificity and style, has no characteristic sound, lacks spice. To my ears, The Popes sound just like any average band now. But there is no accounting for tastes, of course.

More likely drugs than drinking. At least he claims so: "I’m no longer addicted to any kind of drugs. Everyone I work with is banned from using them. I use prescription drugs to cope with my hellraising lifestyle. But I’m not hooked on heroin, crack or cocaine." (From April’s Daily Mirror – full article here and here) But of course, his mysterious new girlfriend might also be the cause... ;)

It is a matter a perference but i think they sounded better with the fiddle and the accordian.Maybe theyre aiming at the American markwet cos they like the punk rock banjo band.
when i first heard the popes i loved it especially the Holloway Boulevard album it was like a god send .Like the Pogues reincarnated .What is going on ?no more fiddle and accordian?
i think i have this gig on a video which never played very well but it will be worth buying in th hope that it is better quality and also in case they never get back the musicians!
No offence but I play banjo and guitar

For the same reason as he jokes about lynching in the south of the US and greets the crowd with "Happy Christmas" in the middle of summer – provocateur born and bred. ;)

Didn't he once open a show by shouting "I hope there's no niggers or spics in here"?

It IS actually a wonder that he has survived all these years! 8)

(But if he greets the audience in Norway with "hello, Swedes" he'll have to run fast to save his arse from a serious beating *gg*)

That would be just like him. Last June in Prague, he greeted the Czech audience with "Hello, Germany", which is also asking for a clip around the ear. But he survived without any difficulty - either the Czechs are tolerant blokes, or they didn’t catch his mumbling. ;)

- prolly the last one, eh, Zuzana? :-) (Or they were afraid that he'd turn sour and leave without singing.)
