Phil i dont remember what bootleg goodnight Irene is on. Found it on the internet a few years ago. But i think it is from 85,86. Maybe MR. Chevron can tell us more about it. I agree Phil with the pogues version of darklands Shane's singing on that version is just amazing.

Have to agree with "Waltzing Matilta". Their version of that sond is incredible, the band plays low and lets the vocals and the lyrics and the images do the work. Masterful!

They played Goodnight Irene at the Town & Country, London during the St Patrick´s week in 1988. I also have it from an earlier show in Dublin together with the Dubliners.

Excellent choice fellas. I looked around to see if Hank Williams ever recorded it and couldn't find anything. Maybe he never got around to it because he died. I believe he was 29 when he died and he died with a bottle of whiskey in his hand on the way to a gig in the backseat of a car. Hank was a brilliant songwriter but I don't think that's all that drew Shane to his work!

I have a feeling Angel Of Death was recorded by Hank under his alias Luke The Drifter, though I am willing to stand corrected on that. In any event, the Luke The Drifter recordings are vital to a better understanding of the tortured soul of Hank Williams.

Shane's version of Danny Boy off the Christmas Lullaby ep. We play it every new years eve and there's not a dry eye in the house.

Very powerful, certainly one of my favourite songs of all time.

I like that version as well but there is an amazing version floating around of Shane singing that on the John Peel radio show in 1984 with The Pogues that is leagues above the version done with The Popes.
