I think Big Tom is in reference to Tom McManamon, banjo player for the Popes, who died last December.

I am well aware of that but remember, fora are text media and therefore I find it annoying when someone here criticises another for absolutely no reason.

Earlier in this thread 'Big Tom' was mentioned; Big Tom is Tom McBride of Big Tom And The Mainliners.

Tom McManamon was the banjo player in The Popes.

Big Tom is alive, unfortunately Tom McManamon is not.

I make no apologies if I sound pedantic.

Although any of these men could be Big Tom, only one man actually is. US counterculturalists in the Sixties were not alone in their disappointment that the band's name had no druggie significance. But Attracta Concepta Maria knew. The little girls always know. The little girls - and their mothers - in search of wedded bliss with multi-acred Farmers with a sweet voice for the singin' of an aul' song of a Saturda' night, knew even more. Big Tom is still the King. True Capitalists never argue with the economic system of other Free Nations. The Rolling Stones never stood a chance.

Philip did you ever meet Big Tom, my Mum was somewhat of a fan, if so what was he like? PS There's only one Big Tom in that Picture, he's the 'Big ' one at the back

Infact today I went around to her house and put a few Big Tom LP's onto CD for her, so I'm Big Tomed out today. My Mums donated loads of pictures to this website, see for yourself:-

The reason I knew Shane was talking about Big Tom is that there is a picture of Big Tom on the bak of Crock of Gold.

Sorry I typed as Guest before saying Big Tom wasn't dead, feel less of an idiot now

Alas no, the Big Man has yet to summon me into his presence. But he will forever be distinguished as the First Man to turn down a Philip Chevron song. He was not the last. No sir, he was not the last. But he was The First. And the passage of time has taught me that King Tom had better taste than was often imagined of him. Mary Black, now that's a different story.

Some serious picture vibes there on your Mom's webpage. I'm afraid I was able to name ALL the stars in the various artists photo. They include Dana, Tony Kenny, Maxi Dick & Twink and Donal Lunny. What they all have in common is they were all in the Irish Eurovision preselection contest in 1970, won, of course, by Dana (though Maxi Dick and Twink wuz robbed!).

As for this one: aside from the hirsute Terry Woods, this picture also contains (centre) Tim Booth, father of Radiators bassist Jesse Booth.

But I could be here all night pointing out intriguing but useless information in these pictures.

Well it's not me Mammies website,(but I suppose it is her page as such) but she has 1,000s of pictures, postcards, album sleeves etc, she scanned a load in for the man who does run the website. Not bad for a lady getting on in years. (God she better never read that).

The website is a great resource for anyone interested in the showbands of yester-year. Drive me crackers on the whole, but keeps the ol' dear entertained.

Just out of interest, what was the song Philip that the Big man turned down?

Ah, you won't have heard (of) it - I can scarcely remember it myself 36 years later!

Mary Black, now that's a different story.

A girl in Nenagh once asked Shane if he had ever met mary Black.
He said "She asked me to write a song for her once but I couldn't come up with anything dreary enough
