When will Shane release another studio album?

Post Thu May 31, 2007 2:31 pm

I've always wondered why Shane hasn't released an album for a very long time. In terms of years it has been 10 years since Shane's last album Crock of Gold. It was rumored that Shane had been writing songs for a new album called Twentieth Century Paddy (which I've read that it was suppose to containd contributions from the likes of Bono and others.) With the recent passing of Big Tom, maybe the album has been put on hold for awhile. However, being a huges Popes fan, here's hoping that some day that album will see the light of day. I remember when I first heard The Snake, I was completely blown away, I thought Shane's writing on that record was back to his usual standards. With the Crock of Gold, I thought his writing was again in top form. I know Shane still has it in him, so fingers crossed, hopefully one day a new Shane MacGowan solo album with come to pass.

Big Tom is still the King, lest there be any misunderstanding of the reference.

Here's to sad songs Big O sings
Here's a letter from Elvis Presley
Big Tom is still the King

I will stalk them in the back seats
I will stalk them in the bars
Rape their women and scare their children
Burn them in their brand new cars

now, beeing 2 Toms, Shaneo had one in moind in that song, roight, he wasn't talkoing about the Beast..
agh, oi woish oi loive to see Shaneo's 3rd album, Philip, have ya consoidered to persuade hem do it woith The Pogues? anyway, what would be the "official" situation, would it be The Pogues or Shane MacGowan & The Pogues?

We have never ruled in or ruled out an 8th studio album and that remains the case. If there is one, it would certainly be a Pogues album not an "and The Pogues" album. Not even Joe Strummer earned that billing. None of which gets in the way of Shane, or any other Pogues, doing solo things without the Pogues, of course.

oif oim not wrong, all in all 8th Pogues album seems more realistic than Shane's 3rd album woith The Popes? especially cause breaking points and creation of new Electroic Popes, and The Popes woith Mad Dog publoishing their own material; and everybody says Shaneo's happy woith the current situation and very actoive tour schedule of The Pogues, so all points to The Pogues growin' stronger & stronger.. oi hope all that woill broing good news in terms of new material :D agh, now thois broings million questions, woill it be the Shane's lyrics and/or music based album, woill we see maybe sth of Mr. Philip's lyrics in style of Thousands are sailin', woill there be oinstrumentals....... but oi'll ask one by one when and oif we hear foirst good news! :D

I think that, on The Crock of Gold, Shane was in danger of turning into a caricature of himself. In my opinion, songs like Paddy Public Enemy Number 1 are a tragic joke when you compare them to the beauty of Shane's best work. Yes, mistakes were made with the Hell's Ditch track listing, resulting in some great Shane songs being left off, but if there are new Shane songs to be heard, I would much rather it was with The Pogues. In terms of musicianship and bringing Shane's work to life, I really think there is no comparison between The Pogues and the Popes. Plus, there is the songwriting of Jem and Philip.

Yeah, The Popes were nothing on The Pogues, musically and in terms of creative talent outside of Shane. I do hope there is more Pogues material, but I'm not too fussed about new Shane and the Popes material as although I love The Snake, I don't really like The Crock Of Gold, and I think if Shane is ever gonna get back to form it would have to be with The Pogues.

I love the Crock of Gold. St John of Gods, Back in the County Hell and Mother Mo Chroi are among Shane's finest (in my opinion) and Paddy Public Enemy Number 1 is a great song, but anyway life would be boring if everyone agreed . . .

In my opinion that's exactly how it should be. With no disrespect meant to any of the Pogues who may be reading this (Philip, James and Spider), I have always thought that the Pogues are more than the sum of their parts and that the material that they produced together was better than their solo stuff...

Just my opinion :D

Like the rest of you, of course I'd love to see another Pogues album. I have no idea what the chances of there being one are though so I'm not holding my breath.

now oi must add to the story..
tis' the ol' story of loiking The Pogues vs. Shaneo & Popes.. why does it have to be vs? both stories feature Shaneo, both are outstandoing, some people moight loike one or the other more or less, and oi meself maybe expressed beeing closer to Shaneo's solo work but in essence it looses the meaning cause theres brilliant stuff in both stories; its often when oi speak of how much oi loike Shane's solo work woith the Popes and cause oi choose many of those songs to perform, people start to thoink "hey, how can smn love Shane & Popes more than The Pogues"; for me its not some quantity stuff.. tis' not loike oi love foirst 52% and second 48%.. that would be stupid; for example, oim throilled in the same way when oi loisten to Oif oi should fall from grace woith God and when oi loisten Mother Mo Chroi from Crock of Gold

now, Crock of Gold is pure expression gold oif ya ask me.. Rock 'n' Roll Paddy, Paddy Rolling Stone & No.1, Mother Mo Chroi, Lonesome Hoighway etc. and same goes for Snake.. just recall of Aisling, Victoria, Donegal Express, Church Of The Holy Spook, That Woman's Got Me Droinkin'...

oif smn asks me, oid loike to see both, 3rd solo album by Shaneo & 8th album of The Pogues 8) :D
