It was rumored that Shane had been writing songs for a new album called Twentieth Century Paddy (which I've read that it was suppose to containd contributions from the likes of Bono and others.) With the recent passing of Big Tom, maybe the album has been put on hold for awhile. However, being a huges Popes fan, here's hoping that some day that album will see the light of day. I remember when I first heard The Snake, I was completely blown away, I thought Shane's writing on that record was back to his usual standards. With the Crock of Gold, I thought his writing was again in top form. I know Shane still has it in him, so fingers crossed, hopefully one day a new Shane MacGowan solo album with come to pass.

Burn them in their brand new cars

In my opinion, songs like Paddy Public Enemy Number 1 are a tragic joke when you compare them to the beauty of Shane's best work. Yes, mistakes were made with the Hell's Ditch track listing, resulting in some great Shane songs being left off, but if there are new Shane songs to be heard, I would much rather it was with The Pogues. In terms of musicianship and bringing Shane's work to life, I really think there is no comparison between The Pogues and the Popes. Plus, there is the songwriting of Jem and Philip.

Not even Joe Strummer earned that billing. None of which gets in the way of Shane, or any other Pogues, doing solo things without the Pogues, of course.
