Hello all.

Has anyone found some accurate historical info. about this song? poguetry.com has some interesting comments, but nothing very solid. It's one of my favorite and I'd like to know more.

Yeah, it may not be as in depth as some of his others, but I just like the visuals it gives me and the story it tells.

James Mangan brought me comfort

James Clarence Mangan, the tragic poet,
born 1st May 1803, 3 Fishamble St, Dublin,
"a prolific and uneven writer of almost every kind of verse whose best work, inspired by love of Ireland, ranks high in Irish poetry" [Enc.Britannica],
wrote for the Nation and United Irishman,
died 20th June 1849, Dublin, age 46 yrs, bur Glasnevin.
There is a memorial to him in St.Stephen's Green, and a Clarence Mangan Road in the Liberties

could be him ?

That's what poguetry.com said as well. I was wondering more about the execution Shane sings about in 1819 on Stephen's Green. I wonder if it has any significance and who it is being executed.
