Shane in new Depp movie?

Post Mon Apr 12, 2004 6:22 am

Kudos to Chris Lattek for finding this.

Link to GQ magazine

In a nutshell - Shane will have a small part in the upcoming Johnny Depp film The Libertine.
“I know all those people that were in the film [...] But that’s when they were young and strong and full of life, you know?”

Here is a bit more about the Libertine movie. Treat the article with caution, lots of factual mistakes.

Toothless with Depp in the 1660s

Sunday April 18th 2004

SHANE MacGowan is acting up. Again. The great bacchanalian street-poet of Irish popular culture is to hit the silver screen next year. And I don't mean with a pint glass of brandy either. Shane's best friend Johnny Depp has asked him to play the part of a rowdy balladeer in Liberty, a movie about Lord Rochester, the half-brother of King Charles II.

"It is a new film in which Johnny is not a pirate," laughed Shane from the set in London where he filmed his scenes last week. "Pirates of the Caribbean wasn't really my scene but this is a swashbuckling movie with blood, guts and intrigue set in scuzzville 1660s Moll Flanders-London." In one scene, Shane makes up a song to ridicule the king (played by John Malkovich). The former Pogues icon liked his costume so much that he asked Depp could he keep it. "So I've now got a big puffy pair of black velvet pantaloons."

In return for the trousers, Shane is going to let Depp play guitar on his new album, out later in the year. I can hardly wait for the world tour. Expect the hellraisin' partnership to announce some future night in Toronto: "We saw a notice that said 'Drink Canada Dry' and we've just started . . ." BE

Seems like every part of that sentence is suspect - Depp on guitar and a new album.

Riiiiight indeed

I don't know.
Depp did play on The Snake. Check the "guest musicians" section in the back:

"Special Teen Idol Johnny Depp
Guitar weird noises."

Depp playing on the "new album" doesn't sound too far fetched to me...

Bala, I think that Kufen (ironicly) was refering to the fact that it is most unlikley that there will be an album out "later in the year".

Fyllo, I was actually responding to the comment above. And I as well doubt there will be a new album this year, but you never know. 21st Century Paddy could be right around the corner.

They are also planning a joint video for the On the Road to Paradise single. This is to support Celtic footballer Jimmy Johnstone's motor neuron disease charity. To be released early May.

Kufen, did your lovely Rochester quotes get censored? Well, they don't make poet laureates like that any more. Look up a few more of his poems here, and you'll see why: http://www.okima.com/cast/poet.html
I can just see Shane doing the satire on Charles II.

May drink and love still reign
With wine I wash away my cares

not sure if anyone posted this yet, but... i'm pretty sure that movie is already out.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0375920/

The story of John Wilmot (Depp), a.k.a. the Earl of Rochester, a 17th century poet who famously drank and debauched his way to an early grave, only to earn posthumous critical acclaim for his life's work.

it's listed there as a 2004 release. i've never seen it, though. but... i want to.
