I remember seing this when I was in Scotland in March/April 1996. Didn´t know that Shane was doing it and I just heard it in the background. Suddenly realised it was Shane and wondered what the **** is this. Don´t remember the comercial but I got the single a few weeks later.

"............One more note on MacGowan; friends in London called to say the great one is currently in yet another campaign of TV commercials. Regular readers will recall that MacGowan did an inspired rendition of "My Way" (as popularized by Sinatra and, much later Sid Vicious) for a Christmas 1996 TV commercial for Nike. Sadly, that version was not released in the U.S. and is available only among hard-to-find imports.

This time, MacGowan stays closer to home with a remake of the old ballad "She Moved Through The Fair". The company MacGowan is shilling for this time around seems to be a bit closer to his heart than does Nike - it's Kilkenny beer.

In the 1990s, comedian Bill Hicks coined the term "sucking Satan's cock", which he used to describe musical acts who make bland music to maximise sales, or allow their music to be used in advertising.

Bill would have made an exception for Shane, as he did for Willie Nelson.

If it helps to pay your bills, or if it gets people interested in your work...so what?

QUESTION ABOUT RECORD MY WAY

Post Sun May 13, 2007 2:49 pm

Hello, in the book "a drink with shane macgown", Shane said that he didn´t want to record his version of MY WAY, but he had to it.
Does anyone know why he had to do it and why he did not want to record it?
When the world is too dark
And I need the light inside of me
I'll go into a bar and drink
Fifteen pints of beer.

As it was part of a huge advertising campaign for some product or other, I can only assume the size of the cheque influenced his decision. They MADE me do it. They gave me LOADS of money.
