John Grinny Grinton / NIPS drummer

Post Mon Apr 24, 2006 3:31 pm

Is it true that the NIPS drummer also went on to play with Skrewdriver?. A band with NF conections.
This would greatly shock me as I allways thought Shane would strongly opposed to these kind of views. Added to the fact that he also knocked about with Paul Weller (Jam) whose strongly left wing & anti racist views are well know.

Did Mark Radcliff once drum with Skrewdriver ? Again this does not seem to add up .

Its true:

"Radcliffe was born in Bolton, UK in 1958, and took an interest in music from a young age, playing the drums in a number of unsuccessful bands (including, briefly, Skrewdriver - before their infamous incarnation as a racist band)..."

Skrewdriver's first album was a good album though. That wasn't right wing yet. I believe the singer stepped out and reformed another group with the same name

Skrewdriver were just a bunch of nice kids from Blackpool. They signed to Chiswick Records at the same time as The Radiators and their first couple of singles and first album were released at more or less the same time as ours. As Mick says, the White Supremacist shite came later. All the same, it has been difficult to separate the innocent early records from the hateful later ones in the minds of their brainless fans, who cherish "You're So Dumb", "Anti-Social" (the singles) and "All Skrewed Up" (the LP) as the early work of their band. These have never been reissued by Chiswick/Ace records. In turn, this has made these records highly valued by collectors. They are constantly being removed from listings by eBay, which has a corporate policy of not tolerating any artefacts which might be construed as fascist, Nazi or neo-fascist.

For the record, Skrewdriver's Chiswick ouput was adequate, enthusiastic identipunk. Without the later history, the records would probably today be viewed with no more than wry nostalgia. And my understanding is Grinny joined the Nips soon after this episode in his life.

Thanks to Mick & Phillip for the replies.
Must say I shocked by this at first but your responses do take the edge of it a little. I always never understood how a label like Chiswick who had top bands like Radiators ,Motorhead , Riff Raff & 101ers could also have a right wing band like Skrewdriver . The fact that the early stuuff was not like this does make things fall into place.I can understand bands having an image change like wearing a different type of clothes (suits to punk or mod to trendy )or changing musical style from one album to the next album. But to "stepped out " with such right wing & racist views it a little scary.

If we knew the answer to "why did they go all white supremacist?"
we could do something about it and the world would most likely be a far better place.

Oh, go on... tell us about the sad, dispossesed days: strolling through Vienna, discussing the themes implicit in Wagner with August Kubizek...
the memories of the gas in the trenches fogging yer mind... the rush of... well.... *regains & maintains*... sad to see bands sinking this low...

Well, they could scarcely have sold fewer, to be honest.
