The Great Hunger documentary

Post Thu Jul 28, 2005 8:57 pm

i watched a BBC documentary about Shane Mcgowan called "The Great Hunger" awhile ago and in the beginning he sits in a studio an sings a song. that song is great and i just wonder if anyone knows its name. i deeply recommend that documentary, its great.

thx for your time.

PS/ "Fairytale" is not the best pogues song, not by a long shot, "If I Should Fall From Grace With God", "Transmetropolitan", "Streams of Whiskey" and "The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn", now there are some candidates;) /DS

In the very beginning? Lonesome Highway from the Crock Of Gold album.

Just watched it (again) last night - it is wonderful. Am I right in thinking it's from 1997?

The Great Hunger

Post Sun Jan 29, 2006 7:26 pm

Did someone ever see that documentary about Shane MacGowan? It is quite good, although we don't learn anything new. I love hearing Sinead O'Connor, Ronnie Drew, Christy Moore and Nick Cave all singing versions of Shane's songs. And I love the footage of Shane recording Lonesome Highway or of him singing in the pub. The interviews are rather useless though. And Shane looks kind of sad and ill in that documentary, that was a shock after seeing The Story of Fairytale of New York, where he was in great shape and looking happy.

There is also Bono from U2 who says that Shane is the greatest writer Ireland has ever produced or something like that.
