need help finding alt version of "You're the One"

Post Fri Jun 10, 2011 5:45 am

I heard a version of "You're the One", the song Shane did with Maire Brennan for the movie Circle of Friends, which is slightly different -- and a great, though subtle improvement -- from the version that appeared in the film, and on The Snake.

It's shorter -- 3:45 -- and the instrumental solo in the middle lacks the pipes, but the most noticeable difference is that Shane begins singing on the last line of the first verse -- "Darling, I know you're the one" -- instead of simply picking up at the following verse.

As a point of reference, here's a link to the version from the movie soundtrack, and from The Snake:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WHPMmRHauNE

Anybody have any idea of where this might have been released? I'd love to get my hands on a copy.

The Maire O'Brennan version isn't actually the original version. The original was recorded with a singer signed at that time to ZTT called Susan Duffy - the musical backing is the same as the released version though.

Think it was due to be on "Rakes, Rats, Pricks & Kicks: An Anthology" as well.

Not sure which ,if any ,of these is the one youre after but the first one on the comp cd fits the bill.

Thanks for the list of possibilities.

The Music of Ireland comp, while having the right track length, seems to be an obnoxiously overproduced remix (think "My Way") with completely alternate vocals. Here's another preview: http://itunes.apple.com/us/album/id363424761

The version on Rare Oul' Stuff is the same as appeared on The Snake.

If maybe someone that actually has the single or mini album could confirm what's on them, that would be most appreciated.

Sorry to confuse matters more but , just dug out a cd ZZT179CD Shane MacGowan And Marie Brennan Youre The One.

Track list;
Youre The One 3;24
Christmas Lullaby 4;37
That Womens Got Me Drinking 3;24

Although listed as 3;24 it plays as 3;58 in windows media player.
Think this is the re issue version with the picture frame cover as oppossed the first issue release with the sunflower cover .I do own the first issue cd single but can not find it.

I don't know that it's confusing matters -- we're just collecting a thorough amount of info, which hopefully will lead to a solution. That's why I described the differences that could be easily distinguished in the version I'm after.

I appreciate your help.

Sorry to be giveing all this info but no real answer.Still unable to find my copy of first issue cd with the sunflower cover .So unable to rule that version out .
The re issue/frame cover ,rare oul stuff and Snake all fail to fit the bill as regard to Shane starting to sing before 2nd verse or lack of pipes that you described.

The Music of Ireland · Welcome Home comp cd is clearly a different version but you have already ruled that out .

Think the Chieftains do a track called Air Youre The One . Kamen does a version on his cd Opus. But never heard these.

A "fan version "from you tube as it appears in the film but with actors voice overs.
Fits the bill as Shane early vocal .The track in question is played at the end credits of the film, but the fan version uses footage and actors voice clips from throughout the film.Big up user/jenbob67 http://www.youtube.com/user/jenbob67

That's definitely the version I'm after. I wonder if it was the version from the actual movie -- i.e. someone grabbed it straight off the film/video -- or if that's just descriptive that it's the end credits song.

I was doing a Google search for 'macgowan "you're the one" 3:45' and the first hit is this thread. (Ha.) The fifth hit is a torrent that lists the track as "You're The One (Kamen/MacGowan) (with Mαire Brennan ) (You're The One CD) 3:45". Whether that means the single, promo, or mini-album that you referenced earlier -- or something else entirely -- remains to be seen.

I have the dvd and that you tube track is the sound from end credits track. The Fan Version done by jenbob67 uses the end credit sound and pastes it with clips from throughout the film which include some actor voice overs that are not on the end credit version. On the dvd the end credit version is just the track [i.e. no actor voice overs]The clumsy above description of it was me not jenbob67.He calls it "My video of the film "Circle of Friends" starring Minnie Driver and Chris
My video of the film "Circle of Friends" starring Minnie Driver and Chris O'Donnell. The song is "You're the One" sung by Shane McGowan and Maire Brennan, which played during the film's credits. Hope you enjoy it, and please comment! :D."

I knew what you meant.

I was gonna say that it's peculiar that they released a different version of the song on the s/t album from what they used in the movie -- but that's not really all that uncommon. The score for Chariots of Fire was completely rerecorded (in that case, improving it).

That's pretty interesting. Might have been a demo for Suzy, but it seems like "finished mix with female temp vocal track" would be a more accurate description. Don't you think?
