Shane opens door for drawing to go under the hammer
Thursday December 09 2010

His unique singing style has made him famous to millions through the classic Christmas song 'Fairy Tale of New York'.

Now a children's charity is hoping that Shane MacGowan's equally unique art will also prove a hit and help needy children.

But the piece in question isn't a painting on a canvas but a drawing on a living-room door that the former Pogues frontman has donated.

The Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC) put the door up for auction on its website last night with a minimum bid of €500.

It said it has no idea how much money the roughly drawn portrait will raise, but ISPCC director of fundraising Lloyd Byrne said all money received will go toward helping children.

"We are really delighted with Shane's support," Mr Byrne said.

Shane MacGowan explained that he donated the door to show his support for the work the ISPCC carries out.

"Children are the most vulnerable people in our society, and I believe charity begins at home."

Bids for the living room door complete with its drawing can be made on http://www.ispcc.ie/fundraising.

The auction closes on December 19, meaning the winning bidder should have the unique art work hanging on a wall, or a doorway of their living room by Christmas.
