The Roughneck Riot play Pogues Christmas gig

MEMBERS of a Warrington folk band are thrilled to be supporting legendary Pogues frontman, Shane MacGowan, in concert this Christmas.

Celtic folk punk six-piece, The Roughneck Riot, will play before the Fairytale of New York singer at the Brixton Jamm aftershow party in London on December 18.

Lead singer and mandolin player, Matty Humphries, aged 20 and from Fearnhead, said: “We are busy and very excited. It’s a fantastic opportunity for us. Shane MacGowan is one of my musical heroes.”

The band, which includes Ryan Taylor, aged 19, on bass guitar, Chris Green, aged 20, on electric guitar, Simon Cowley, aged 22, on drums, Caitlin Costello, aged 18, on the banjo, and Jade Franklin, aged 20, on the accordian, is also about to release debut album Night Train With The Reaper.

In addition a European tour is planned next March with The Mahones, a Canadian band and The Popes – Shane MacGowan's other band.

The Roughneck Riot have also been busy in their hometown with the opening of a recording studio, called Hell’s Ditch, which is located at Bank Quay Trading Estate and offers recording and rehearsal space for other bands.

The band, which does not have a record deal, has been together for the past five years and also counts country star Johnny Cash and Joe Strummer, of The Clash, who died in 2003 and 2002 respectively, as its musical heroes.

Matty, a former Padgate High School pupil, added: “We listened to The Pogues and learned Irish music and got into punk and our sound grew from there.”

The band, whose songs draw on real life experiences and literature, has performed all over the UK and Holland, including Levenshulme Irish Festival and Strummer Camp, in Ashton, Greater Manchester.

Matty added: “We now have the sound we’ve always wanted and people seem to like us. For us being on the road is what it’s all about and we can’t wait for that.”

To buy tickets for Brixton Jamm, which cost £10, or to find out more about the band visit theroughneckriot.com, myspace.com/theroughneckriot or myspace.com/hellsditchstudio or call Matty on 07852 507594 or e-mail info@theroughneckriot.com.

Re-posting the after show party poster as the original post by our own MacRua disappeared due to to well-known circumstances:

Regarding tickets for the after-show charity party:
The tickets will only be available on the door!
But it's a big club so everyone should be fine.

Does it make me wrong to say that "appetite" and Shane MacGowan do not go together? Maybe it's just because I've seen him vomit on one of the few occasions I've shared breathing space with the man.
