Yes, I liked that too, though it made me wonder what Oirish Rover would have made of it. Especially as our native religion was, basically, Paganism.

Not exactly paganism, more druidism, Mr.C. And, as far I know a thing or two about it (old druidism, not the new-druidism stupidity), I guess you can call it some kind of organized religion. At least it was, at a time, spread all over europe. Any Celtic nations had their druids and druidic centers. You can read something about this in some passages from "The Gallic Wars", by Cesar. Paganism is just a word and comes"from Pagus" - meaning provincial, in opposition with urban, that the christian used to described the peoples that took long to let it go their old believes.

Indeed so, but my point was the Irish were,(and remain, to a large extent, which is why slipping loose the chains of Catholicism came so easily to us in the end) Christian recusants all along which is why, as you so accurately state, they were, by Christian definition, Pagans.

Point taken, Mr.C. The real problem is, of course, that all we know from the Iron Age peoples (including the Irish) was written by their opponents – first Rome, and then the Christians, who didn’t have a special interest in being accurate when it comes to describe them. So, there’s a lot of false propaganda and defamation in classic and medieval texts about our native religions and peoples. (I’m from the north of Portugal and the case here is even more painful, because our Iron Age history is even cloudier). But there’s always some leaks and bridges that we can study and that’s why so important to me that people that reveals any interest on this topics to not let be confused by a matter that is, by its own nature, so complex. The Irish history is, of course, a subject that can clarify much of the questions arose by this period because, first, Irish were not Romanized and preserved their Celtic legacy longer, and two, because, as you so nicely put, they were, indeed, Christian recusants all along. Think Pelagius and the Celtic church, for instance...well, I don’t want to bother you more with my thoughts about this. Best regards, Mr. C.

Yes, history is, as they say, written by the victors. I'm glad you are helping to redress the balance.

Whatever happened to Shane being okay with the Church of the Holy Spook? It was good enough for his daddy and his dear old mammy too.

in ADWSM:

"yeah, if they ever elect an Irish pope I'm in with a chance"

and

"...you've just got to be overwhelmed by the idea of getting your mucic on to a piece of fucking vinyl, or whatever they make compact discs out of. Metal or whatever it is"

On Frank Skinner in 2004

FS: "So I understand you now can't smoke in public places in Ireland now?"

SM: "No, it's illegal to smoke in pubs in Ireland"
The filth and the fury, the fear and the pain
It's all disappearing now
Faster than the smoke from this old train

This is one of my favorites from the documentary “The Story of the Fairytale of New York” - Shane, talking about the Pet Shop Boys beating Fairy Tale of New York to #1 in the charts.

“I thought it was a disgusting fucking record, it was errr cynical, jaded, pathetic like…errr …..I quite liked the Pet Shop Boys before that”

I love the comment on Planxty Noel Hill interview were the guy asks him do you feel the band get the same criticism the rolling stones got taking their music to America "Coals to Newcastle" and Shane says "Yeah well they were right about them" ha ha. It would have been so easy to take the comment to support his own argument ha ha

My favourite was Shane's "Hello Liverpool" at the MEN Arena.
