Sharon Shannon records Mama Lou & Rake @ Gates of Hell

Post Fri Sep 11, 2009 1:25 am

Sharon Shanon September Newsletter

Sharon Shannon returns, with a great new single featuring Galway newcomers, The Cartoon Thieves. The song entitled Mama Lou was written by Pogues frontman Shane MacGowan.

It was an outtake from the Crock of Gold album by The Popes but Sharon has adapted it. This single is a high energy romp, great fun and a perfect way to get a brief respite from all the doom and gloom that surrounds us today. The Cartoon Thieves are Galway’s best kept secret, and here they join Sharon and her big band for a joyous workout of this little known MacGowan tune.
The single is taken from and to herald Sharon’s album ‘Saints and Scoundrels’ ; which is now finished in terms of recording and we are just on the artwork stage at the moment so all looks great for the September 25th release Date here in Ireland.

The single will be available free to download on sharonshannon.com for a limited time.

I see looking at the page that the final track on the album is:
RAKE AT THE GATES OF HELL & THE SCOUNDREL’S HALO Shane MacGowan (3:14)

Gave it a listen. It's somewhere between Amy Winehouse and a bargain basement Irish country western artist in it's production and the song itself remains a less interesting version of Infinity. It's okay. I'd rather they released the version of Courtin' In The Kitchen with Shane and Mundy on it.

Just heard it now. Your dead on with the review. I'm impressed with the clarity of Shanes vocal. I don't like the arrangement either.

Mark Ronson wants a bullet in the back of the brain for his influence on pop music.

The horns! He slathers everything in a sleazy, passionless layer of brass.

Oh Jesus Christ. Sticks, which end have you got? i've got the wrong end obviously.

That's why i said earlier that Shane's vocal is pretty good on Rake, but not the arrangement.

I like Mama Lou. Who's singing it?

I like Sharon but much prefer Shane and the Popes version of Mama Lou (outtake from Crock of Gold).
