Shane MacGowan's live show comments

Post Tue Jan 27, 2009 1:58 pm

Well this topic is not very important, but did you realise how great Shane MacGowan's comments during live shows are? They always make me laugh, because they are quite hilarious and taken out of context. For example: "Good Evening meine Kinder! Mein Name ist General Duffey!" (he speaks German there, I come from Germany so I find this one really brilliant :mrgreen: ). On the Montreaux Jazz Festival Live-DVD from 1995 with the Popes, he repeats something with "Sieg Heil" about three or four times between the songs. ("Sieg Heil" was a salutation to honor Adolf Hitler during a very dark time in Germany of which I'm not proud [in some countries people still think that people like me are "Nazis" because of that time, though I'm 18 and wasn't alive when those Brown Fuckers were around]). Well, "Sieg Heil" is not funny, but when Shane MacGowan says it out of the context it does sound hilarious excuse me. And there are some more great comments as well. :wink:

Following the spirit of Enlightenment.. The general's name was O'Duffy and Shane knows it.

I´m sorry that I don´t seem to get it ... but what´s hilarious about Shane saying "Sieg heil" !?

Actually I don´t remember him saying that on the Montreux DVD (have to watch it again I guess). If he does´it´s more likely to be nothing but a provocation, just like his reference to General O´Duffy who was another fascist bastard.

Oh, and by the way ... finding Shane saying "Sieg heil" kind of hilarious and other hand wondering that some people still think of Germans as Nazis is at least a bit naive, isn´t it !?

@The Irish Rover:

Yeah, you're right. "Merci Beaucoup, Sieg Heil and Romance." Thanks for adding that, I forgot about that phrase :P

@The Duke of Igmar:

I'm sorry but I suppose you misunterstood me. I didn't mean that "Sieg Heil" is a hilarious or funny comment at all. It's a reminder of a terrible past for sure. And as I wrote already, I'm not proud of it. In fact it's a shame what happened. But I suppose in retrospective you CAN laugh about something like Shane MacGowan saying "Sieg Heil" totally ripped out of the context, with his weird pronunciation and accent. I mean, you can laugh about Charlie Chaplin taking the piss out of Adolf Hitler in his movie, can you? I knew that some people would get the message wrong.

I just wanted to say, that Shane MacGowan's comments between his songs during live shows are pretty funny. Because as I said already, they are ripped out of sense or context, and especially when he speaks German, his pronunciation is funny, and when he's drunk than it sounds great. That's all I wanted to say. I didn't want to offend people with Nazi-phrases. And NO, I'm not a Nazi, in fact I'm the total opposite and my political attitude is left-wing (don't know If you can say that in English, my English is not that good sorry).

Ok, that's all for now. Cya!

The Duke of Ingmar wrote:I´m sorry that I don´t seem to get it ... but what´s hilarious about Shane saying "Sieg heil" !?

And what's wrong about saying "Sieg Heil"?

"Sieg Heil", meaning "Hail Victory", was/is actually a salutation to Victory, (a salutation to honour Adolf Hitler and a common greeting was "Heil Hitler"). Sieg Heil was a chant at political rallies and other massive gatherings. Like "Yes-we-can", just another pointless but cheering nonsense endless repeating of which gave people sense of unity and confidence.

The Duke of Ingmar wrote:his reference to General O´Duffy who was another fascist bastard.

If you say A why not to say B? If you are introducing Eoin O'Duffy to a person who hasnt a slightest idea about the general, calling him a fascists, why you'd not mention he was Micheal Collins's companion for example? Director and later Chief of Staff of IRA? A general in Free State Army (the youngest general in Europe for the moment)? Commissioner of the Garda Síochána? Michael Collins called him "the best man by far in Ulster". you know? And named O’Duffy as his successor to lead the nation.. Your image of the general is one sided a bit. A fascist bastard.. He wasnt that simple, the President of the Irish Olympic Council :wink:

The Duke of Ingmar wrote:Oh, and by the way ... finding Shane saying "Sieg heil" kind of hilarious and other hand wondering that some people still think of Germans as Nazis is at least a bit naive, isn´t it !?

Ability to see funny moments or mocking PC off doesnt make you a Nazi.

It's a reminder of a terrible past for sure. And as I wrote already, I'm not proud of it. In fact it's a shame what happened.

Just do not begin to apologize for something you have nothing to do with, morning! The Duke of Ingmar, hinting at your inborn "nazi bent", is as provocative as Shane shouting "Sieg Heil". Call it hilarious and smile.

So is it hilarious or not at the end of the day? :lol:

That he is a clown? :lol:

And if you want to learn about Eoin O'Duffy I recommend you Eoin O'Duffy: A Self-made Hero by Fearghal McGarry.

:D Well...yeah it's hilarious the way Shane says it. Because we know (or we like to think we know) that Shane isn't a Nazi. We (those who don't know Shane personally and haven't met him [I don't know if you ever met him]) can't know if he's a Nazi or not, but I suppose he isn't. Well, I'm SURE he isn't. I think in his book with Victoria Clarke he said, he is a kind of communist, or he likes the idea, so he shouldn't be a Nazi. So it is funny because Shane doesn't mean it, he just wants to provoke the audience and those who take it too serious.

And I don't want anyone to tell me that I think of Shane MacGowan as a Nazi after this post. I just meant that those who don't know Shane (except from his music and the Pogues and so on), like me, can't know if he's a Nazi or not. He could be a Nazi and we wouldn't know if he wouldn't tell us, yeah? I THINK he is not a Nazi, but I can't know if he likes German beer or whatever as well, because I don't know him. But I think that he is NO Nazi, so don't get me wrong here.

:D Well it is a bit hard to explain what I want to say, because my English is not too great (I'm from Germany). I tend to repeat myself, sry.

Well another great comment is in my signature. Not that I don't like Americans, but when Shane MacGowan says "God bless America not"...quite funny as well. And the classic phrase from a show in Japan (in 1988 I think), where a bloke from the audience said something like: "...you're ugly..." and Shane MacGowan said: "Yeah I know that, this is called Streams of Whiskey, doesn't matter, I'm rich! HAA!"

Brilliant, really. I think the man is very self-ironic and doesn't take himself too serious. Thats why I find him so symphatetic (and because of his brilliant music of course).

How do you know when Shane does mean it ("he said, he is a kind of communist, or he likes the idea") and when he does not ( "Sieg Heil", "he just wants to provoke", etc..) ?
Any screw rule? :wink:

You don't. That's the thing about Shane. One's own accumulated empirical experience of him over 32 years is always more reliable (though not infallible) than anything he actually says.

So what's your distilled impression of him then?

Throw in a Catholic Miraculous Medal and some Tao stuff and you're almost there. Just don't get him started on Moby Dick.
