Release The Beast
Out August 30th
The Popes debut album and storming London gig on fantastic new collection.
‘It’s got a great live album (like The Who’s Live At Leeds) and an even better party album and it has a few of my best tracks on it...’ Shane MacGowan
When Shane MacGowan’s debauchery reached the level that the rest of the Pogues couldn’t take it any more, he drifted into a period of inactivity from which many feared he might never return. However in the mid-nineties he made a return with a new band. The band, who were almost as mental him (one is known as Mad Dog and another Tom McAnimal) were The Popes.
On August 30th, Release The Beast comes out on Recall. This 2CD set contains a riotous live show from the band, recorded in London, alongside The Pope’s first album without Shane, Holloway Boulevard. Holloway Boulevard contains several tracks co-written by Shane, as well as a guest vocal performance on Chino’s Place.
The live album has never been released before and contains many of the great tunes from Holloway Boulevard like The Hills Of Connemara (about ‘foxin the filth and poitin making’ apparently) alongside other crackers such as Church Of The Holy Spook, in the environment they work best, a raucous, booze soaked Irish centre in the west of London.
As Shane states, in the sleeve notes that he literally scribbled on the back of several fag packets, ‘This album should be played loud, maggots. This is the best live white Irish Rock ‘n’ Roll record ever made.....
Why...
...because I said so.’
