It was an early one- pre Phil & Terry- at Warwick University Students Union- every Saturday night they would have a whipround gig- entry free- pay what you think the band is worth! It was often used by new, upcoming bands or as a warm up show for bands about to embark on a major tour. One Saturday -must have been 1984- wondered who the hell the hooligans were blazing out one almighty drunken racket- brilliant. Did have the misfortune the following week of seeing sigue sigue sputnik!

GOD! What a memory I've got no idea on the support but lash larriet atlr ring a very very dull bell! I put it down to the fact I was allready a lot older than you I was 23 more brain cells have definately bin drowned since then. I woke up the next day with both arms bruised from hands to elbow from banging on the staging to wild rover? You know "no nay never" bash, bash, bash, bash. I'd like to say age has matured me but after dancing about like a lunatic on monday night at the acadamy, I'd be lying

my love affair with the pogues began in July 87, Wembly stadium, it was a U2 gig with Lone Justice, The Pogues and Lou Reed supporting.

cant recollect too much apart from thinking "what the **** is this?!?" closely followed by "**** me this is amazing!"

songwise i can recall Sally Mac, Waltzing Mathilda, Brown eyes and thats about it. i do remember they blew a coke addled Lou reed about 20 miles off stage!

There's a blast from the past... I think I still have a LL&LR 10" stashed around here somewhere.

I first saw the Pogues in Boston in '91 I think... don't remember the venue. Shane was still in the band when I bought tickets, but by the time the show arrived it was Strummer. I was a bit torn, since I'd never seen either of them, but it turned out to be the only time I ever saw Joe play, so I guess I should consider it lucky.

Of course, it didn't matter much in the end, since like typical 19-year-olds my friends and I drank a half-case of Guinness and a bottle of Jameson, and I spent most of the show in the toilets heaving my guts out--I distinctly remember hearing 'London Calling' through the wall as I sat with my head against the porcelain... remember, kids, alcohol makes you cool!
cheers,

Hello...my debut post on here. At 52yrs old i've finally got (and learned to use) a computer...
right, first time I saw the pogues...august 85..Scunthorpe free fest..had been playing football that morning, then in the pub..twas a sunday and the pubs shut at 2pm..a bunch of us walked to the fields where the fest was...I was stiff as hadn't showered after the match..wanted a drink!..almost went home instead, but boomtown rats were top of the bill so...a mate had mentioned this band a few days earlier..told me he knew i'd love them...so at some point in the late afternoon...i'd accidently become very drunk and stoned...my poor stiff legs were protesting, even though I was sat on me arse...I heard 'this band' were coming on..struggled to my feet and watched as a bunch of dodgy-looking fuckers shuffled on...I gradually became aware of groups of people dancing jigs and reels and stuff and having a fucking good time! This HUGE grin filled my face...fuck my tired legs...leapt in among the nearest bunch..marvellous..I felt like I belonged right there, dancing with these strangers...and i'm no dancer...don't think i've stopped dancing yet...it sounds corny but it somehow changed everything...and then they did 'dirty old town' with the smoky steelworks behind them, belching out all kinds of shite...and tears ran down my face.
The 'rats' were good but...i'd been got.

My first Pogues gig was in 2007 in New York on St Paddys Day, it was a very memorable occasion and i will now be going back for the third year in a row, so far each time i have seen them they have been great, last year seemed to be even better than the year previous as fortunate to see Philip regains his health and perform admirably for all, it was oure joy watching him perform Thousands, and to be able to share the moment with so many other Medusans present, here's to repeating the joy once more this March??....................................... :D

As for the 2007 show, we endured a blizzard of course that hit NY and our train was the last one that got into NY, by this time all airports had been shut down. We all had our trepidations going down, as the one lad announced shortly after getting on board that the show on Thursday night i believe had been canceled due to an unfortunate spill by Shane Macgown, where by he tore up some knee ligaments, so here we are sitting on this train heading to NY not knowing if he was going to perform or even the rest of The Pogues. Well history shows that Shane did come on stage in a wheel chair and performed with the guts he has shown in the past, all drugged up on pain killers and such, he did a fine job. There was scene that I really wish i could have gotten a picture of, and that was after one set of songs the whole band got behind the wheel chair and a line of the seven pushed Shane off stage, another classic example of this groups showmanship, if any one knows of where a pic of this moment is available, it was a magical moment for that show??............I would love to see it , I'm sure there is one out there somewhere, and i would love to get my hands on a copy if possible, as it is one of those classic moments??

Last year there was a notable difference in Shanes performance, he was just so much more bang on than in 2007, but is it any wonder when one is loaded with pain killers and trying his damdest to perform, that he would lose a bit of an edge.

It was most appreciated that the SHOW went on that night Mar 17th 2007 @ Roseland, and it is lodged rather burned into the memory banks??

And here we are now, just a few short weeks away from seeing them once again @ Roseland??

Great little story, Barney. Have you seen them much since? Through the 80's and any reunion gigs

Fr Mcgreer, thankyou..I enjoyed writing it...yeah, Isaw them again in Scunthorpe, '88 if I remember right...charity gig at the Baths Hall...with Kirsty, bless her...the band even paid their own hotel bill (my father-in-law worked there)...proper top people aren't they! My father-in-law was night porter...when they turned up to get back in after the gig...he wouldn't let 'em in! He told me he thought it was 'drunken tramps'. My mate went back, jammy bastard, regaled me with tales of drunkenness and cruelty (Ray Davies '66)...one story from that night, I heard a guy was on his way from a pub to the gig, desperate for a piss...had one in an alley...got arrested...five minutes away from the gig...they let him out after it'd finished..bastards eh?
Also 1991 at Leeds University and Nottingham Dec 07.
I doubt if i'll go to any more...i'm always skint and don't travel well cos my back's fucked.
I've got the music and the memories...

It's me again father (would you like an ice-cold beer, by the way)...
Incidentally..ever read 'The Lost Decade'?...the late '80s book about the Pogues..written by a lass from Brigg, 5 miles from Scunthorpe...Anne Scanlon, her parents had a great pub, I used to get a long-suffering girlfriend to drive there...jukebox full of Irish stuff...and get shitfaced...she fucked me off in the end...women eh? But the band have drank in there a time or two.
I don't live round scunny way now..I bet that old pub has been shut down by now...oh..i've made myself sad thinking that. bollocks to the smoking ban. :?
ps..I haven't seen my copy of the book for 11 years..i know where it is, but it's better to lose the book than maybe an eye!

Yeah, a beer would be great. The Lost Decade is a good read. Don't give up on the gigs, you should read Firehazard's exploits getting to shows (search for Travelpogue i think). Stop reminissing and get to the next gigs. We're all old fuckers now!

old barney greyheron, i hope you don't mind me saying that i, too, hope you're able to make it to some more gigs. you seem like the kind of person i'd love to have a drink with and listen to. :) i've also heard from people much wiser than myself that it's always worth doing things you may regret than not doing them.

on topic: my first was in dublin in '05. originally for dropkick but got hooked on the pogues.

have since seen them in san francisco and vegas in '06 (was kicked out of the first nights gig before it started for being far too drunk to function properly [long and semi-acceptable story; honestly), dublin (again in '08) and london on the same trip.

i'd consider the west coast this year if there's a tour, but definately london and dublin again over the holidays - again, assuming a tour. maybe even catch a show in another uk spot.
Lend me ten pounds, I'll buy you a drink.
