What was your first Pogues gig?

Post Sun Nov 23, 2008 7:45 pm

Was at University in Glasgow and was invited along with family to go and see the Pogues at the Barrowlands in December 1986.

Apart from the whole place erupting, I lost my shoes, all my money and ended up getting a smack in the lug from a copper for back chatting him.

Regardless, an amazing night

I first saw The Pogues in Boston in 87. I believe it was 87, the college years are mostly a blur now.

Joe Strummer was on guitar and Shane was singing. Joe didn't have his regular 66 strat. He sat on a stool and played what I would call an accoustic style guitar. I remember they did London Calling as an encore.

My Dad took me to Brixton way back in '05. Very ably supported by the Dropkicks, who I liked even then. I remember Spider talking through Scratchy's mic "Let's go Murphys!" and Scratchy describing him as their number one fan.

Anyway I've seen the Pogues every year since then.

We went for our usual pre-gig workout at Manchester's top gym, if I remember correctly.

Filene Center, Wolf Trap National Park, in Northern Virginia (just outside of DC), July 25, 1989 (or 25 July, 1989, depending on how you feel like writing it). I'll leave the description to Mojo Nixon's website:

7-4-89 Mojo begins tour with the Pogues and Violent Femmes.

7-25-89 Nixon and Roper perform the real This Land is Your Land on stage at the high falutin' Wolf Trap National Park amphitheater. He is joined by the Pogues and Shane McGowan falls down on stage and continues singing and drinking. Many blue-haired ladies are offended and Nixon and his wife are banned for life from the facility.

Good times. The Pogues were impressively tight in a musical sense. Shane was impressively tight in an old school slang sense.

Dublion 2001. When I was growing up my dad always played the pogues in the car on trips down the country etc. SO went with him for the laugh pretty much. realised I remembered most of the songs and that they were actualyl the greatest songs on earth.

Favorite band ever since

I have never seen The Pogues live .as a mum of 5 money was tight in the 80s and early 90s.Then I began to lose my sight and thought I would probably never go to any gig again. This year I decided that with the Leeds gig being walking distance from where I live I just had to go.So on Tuesday ,at the age of 51,and registered blind I shall be at my first ever Pogues gig(on the balcony in the disabled seats so should be safe enough).Shame Phil won't be there, but who knows maybe next year?

March 88 Royal Court Liverpool. Unfortunately my memories are blured in with the town and country video that was released shortly after as it was the same tour

My first Pogues gig (aged 17) was at the Cambridge Corn exchange as part of the tour with Joe Strummer. I got right near the front from the off, just in front of Mr C and was absolutely blown away by the power of IISFGWG, absolutely awesome - which I think is why that track remains one of my favourites. I also went to the Leicester De Montfort hall gig a few days later in that tour - I recall nearly having to not go to that due to absolutely pea soup fog everywhere - did though and another cracking gig!

Have been to as many as possible ever since - one of the most memorable being the 10th anniverary of the Mean Fiddler in (1992 I think) as that was such a small intimate venue. Been to a gig at all the recent tours - all wonderful - will be at Birmingham this year - can't wait!!! :D :D

84 ish, think you will like this one!
At the tender of 15 myself and a mate caught a train from Stafford to Birmingham to see The Pogues at the Powerhouse. We had sneeked some beer on the train but no way were we going to get served in the boozers of Brum so camped out on the steps of the venue. Who should then walk by but the man himself Shane having spent a bit of time in a local pub. We got chatting and Shane invited me and my mate into watch the band doing their warm up. He then took a poster from the wall and got the group to sign it for me (I still have this framed on my wall to this day)
To continue...I got a kiss (well a peck on the cheek of Cait) got in the gig free and Shane dedicated Waxies Gargle to myself and my friend.
The atmosphere was electric, the venue was a dump but this added to the whole experience
Needless to say i have been following the group ever since!!!!
