sorry to see the myth that spider thought of the name being petrpetuated. at the time of the bands inception he had never even been to ireland.
i was a regular in the hanway street shop where shane worked and was there when they were going through a variety of names. there used to be a tall irish guy working there at the time who suggested two names "the men they couldn't hang" and "pog mo thoin" , "pog mo ..." won they day and "the men they..." became the moniker for fellow shop regular Cush newly formed band.

Yes, "póg mo thóin" is the original Irish Gaelic spelling. "Pogue mahone" is the anglicized version - perhaps as close English reflection of the original Irish pronunciation as possible. The translation is not necessary, I guess.
