My first memory of the Pogues was on the Saturday morning after they had appeared on The Tube on Friday evening. I was in the pub (the Pack Horse) for a few early pints when , at about 8 o clock my mate (Dave Topham) comes in & tells me he has just watched a great band on The Tube & that I will love them, How right he was, I watched the video tape recording on Saturday & was totally hooked & have been ever since. I have watched The Pogues many times, the most memorable shows being at The Hacienda, Sloskys (manchester) & Brixton academy. I went to an anti apartied gig at the NEC (birmingham) just to watch the Pogues & it seemed like everyone else had done the same, there were just loads of Pogues fans in the bar waiting for their 15 minutes on stage. Does anyone else recall being at the NEC that day ?

I first heard the Pogues while watching "The Shane MacGowan Story".

But I remember hearing "IISFFGWG" on the Subaru commercial too, dont know which came first.

I don't know The Pogues for that long comparing to most of the people here, I heard Fairytale of New York on the radio almost two years ago and fell in love with the song. I'm glad I was in the car at that moment.

I have two children under the age of 7 so the Children's BBC channel CBeebies is often on in our house...anyway whats this got to do with the Pogues, i wonder how many people will visit this forum in years to come and claim the first time they ever heard the Pogues, was when they heard the music from "Fiesta" on CBeebies?????

It may well happen, Aled. I remember from the late 80s that my kids soon picked up that they were hearing the same music from a kids' TV programme (the wonderful Gilbert's Fridge) that they heard on the car stereo (The Pogues were the regular soundtrack to family car journeys)...

Yes probbably your right, i loved (and still do) Elvis Presley due to Dad listening to it in the car! Many of the older guys from the Rugby Club got their kids into Queen after watching the Gladiators programme!
Thing is at the moment my children know the words (controlled mind, son sings "shoot" not sh*T) to Dropkick Murphys Going out in Style!
Cheers
Aled

ps My brother and I got some street cred due to Gilbert's love of the Pogues, as well as the TV programme he was also interviewed in many girly teeny mags!

Drinking with them in 1984 at the SU Bar in the University of East Anglia. We lined up 14 pints of Guiness before they went on, Shane had already downed a bottle of gin, I think and was clinging to another of dubious wine.

They played on a 4 inch plinth among the revellers and they captured my soul that night. Their energy and craic sent me on a 30 year trip of mad folk and wonderful music. I began playing the whistle and started a folk group called Placebo in the late 80s.

Years moved on, but I could not escape from the energy and fever that they had infected me with that first night, so I formed an eclectic folk rock band Jonah's Lift - inspired by their energy and adventure, the rest is history!

I now make a wonderful living touring with my band. And, although we play world folk as well, we exude the energy that I remember beig given by that very first live gig I attended, and the oh-so-many after.

Our fans love that. And I thank ALL The Pogues for showing us the way!

I was introduced to Alice Cooper in 1978 by his appearance on The Muppet Show, and became a big fan (I was 5), so it can happen.

 I really only discovered the Pogues earlier this year.Where have I been all my life? It was last St. PAT' s and I was sitting in a pub with my sister and she's like "screw this crap music, I'm gonna play some GOOD irish music and played "A Pair of Brown Eyes. Of course at this point I'm a bit smashed and got a bit teary eyed and said"Who the hell sings
this, I'm in LOVE with him!" Unfortunately, too late. I don't know if the Pogues will be coming back to the States. If anyone hears there is a chance please let me know!!!! I will travel anywhere to see them! Currently I'm saving to travel to Ireland in hopes of seeing Shane at the pub, among other things. I'm hoping to get some framed art of Shane for Chistmas this year! Yep, completely ass over tea kettle for him. Wow, I sound a bit much, sorry 'bout that! :
