Meeting The Pogues

Post Tue Dec 22, 2009 7:28 pm

Having followed the group for a number of years I have been fortunate enough to meet them twice.

The 1st at the B'ham Powerhouse at the release of Rum/Sodomy was when myself & a mate were camped out on the doorstep waiting for the venue to open (too young to get served in the local)! All of a sudden Shane comes along takes us through the back door gets us full autographs, grab a kiss of Cait and during the set get Waxies darge dedicated
For an impressonale 15/16 year old still remembering that night with fondness (now 41)! Still got the autographs pride of place on my wall to this date

Next time was at Leicester de Montfort Hall probably Hells Ditch era. Having blagged my way backstage after the gig was told by a security guy "Not to f**k with shane"!!
Sat there for ages talking to Terry (Top Bloke) got autographs & about 30 minutes Shane sporting shades shouted in my direction for a fag (well i wasn't going to say no was I )?
Absolute Legendary, thoughts that will stay with me forever

I had a dream I met them back when I first started getting into them and learning who was who. We were all drinking together after a gig. I remember Dream Spider Stacey being especially friendly, though he looked nothing like the real one.

Meeting Pogues in random places

Rather bizarrely I bumped into Jem on Saturday afternoon at Tatton Park in Cheshire, he was with his wife who found it quite hilarious that someone should recognise him among the wild deer and sheep!

I’ve not idea why he was there but I’m sure I read somewhere he was from not to far from there?

I've met Shane and Andrew after gigs. Both were very kind. I disappointed myself with having nothing of substance to say to the former and was slightly too inebriated to be able to do much beyond congratulate the latter on a great show, shaking his hand and walking away without fear of embarrassing myself.

I spotted what was probably Chevron (good suit, nice hat) round the Old Vic the month before last. I'm a carer, was on a double seated bike with my client. I didn't stop because I'd been staring at the man for a good thirty seconds more than anyone would be comfortable with.

Hey! You should always say "Hi". We might never meet again. Usually I can feel, with the eyes at the back of my head, when I am being "looked at". Sorry my instincts let me down on this occasion.

On reflection, I was probably preoccupied at the time with the attempt to change my seat for one a bit closer to the quietly-spoken Stephen Dillane. I still have a degree of vestigial deafness after my scary profound deafness episode three years ago. All that's left is a form of tinnitus - infinitely preferable to being stone deaf but still in need of vigilence and management when actors and singers choose the pianissimo option.

I'm sure you're offered no shortage of advice, but to add my two cents (on behalf of a friend who has long suffered tinnitus)... i understand accupuncture works wonders.

That's crazy! How will sticking needles into his ear possibly help? Surely puncturing his ear drum can only hurt the situation.

I kid, I kid.

The strangest thing: I was seated next to an accupuncturist at dinner at Pete Holidai's wedding last week. I've always wanted to ask an accupuncturist if they ever practise on themselves. "Oh no," she said, "I'm scared of needles". I found myself saying "but it doesn't hurt a bit, honestly."

Ten pounds an hour, and free access to your drinks cabinet and you've got yourself a deal, sir.
