Drugs

Post Tue May 02, 2006 9:54 pm

I recently attended a music party with many celebs in london. One thing i found quite amazing was the amount of cocaine being consumed all over the place and it seemed nearly every band thought they had to be taking cocaine. Why is this? Was it like this in the Pogues days? It seemed like it was being encouraged that bands should be taking cocaine. If anything this made me certainly not wish to join in with this mass consumption of cocaine as everyone, i felt, seemed to be doing it just to look cool. I put this in the live section as i assume usually this sort of thing goes on at aftershow parties as well. I know the Housemartins (an excellent band) claimed to have an anti drugs policy but wot about the pogues? I imagine MacGowan, Spider and a few others would be doing it. But the likes of Jem and Mr C? I somehow dont see it. So Mr C, did you too feel the same about this cocaine/band issue as i did when i recently observed it?

I don't do drugs, unless you count Red Bull and cigarettes, and there is no real drug culture in the Pogues, which is not to say this was always the case.

I've got to count Red Bull as that stuff freaks me out in a way no other drug has. Maybe its the Guarana........

Glad to hear it Mr C. Coincidentally I am drinking a can of Red Bull right now. I understand that now many of the members of the band are responsible parents or in long term relationships and so on (ie. in situations which mean drug taking would be quite pointless and / or irresponsible) there is are no problems with such things anymore. I think the Pogues overall seem to give the idea of the best type of intoxication being had from drinking, which is a good thing as many friends I have who admire MacGowan's old mucka Pete Doherty see him as a role model and spend silly money on drugs.

I think it's crazy to say that alcohol is somehow a safer option than cocaine or heroin. I don't know how you can say such a thing when the evidence is all around you. Alcohol will kill you just as dead as anything else and cause you just as much misery whilst it is doing it.

I can see exactly where your coming from but it really depends whos hands the alcohol / drugs are in. Of course, if some cunt goes out, gets drunk and comes home and beats his wife and kids this is much worse than someone simply going for a night out and having a line of cocaine and causing no one any bother. However, it could equally be said that someone could go for out for a social drink and relax and someone on heroin could go about the place committing various crime to fund their addiction. I think it just depends in whose hands the intoxicant is in and that they know how far they should go. However, i would certainly not tell my kids that alcohol is of equal danger as cocaine and heroin. Let us not forget the dealers of such substances who target youngsters, ruin their lives and are able to use this as their main source of income.

When I also mentioned the Pogues 'drug of choice' so to speak as being alcohol, I did not mean that they encouraged alcoholism or anything, just having a good time with a few drinks, much like one would endulge in at a Pogues gig.

It is not actually possible to "encourage" alcoholism. Like diabetes, you either got it or you ain't. But it may be true that the only way to find out is by having several "good times". You'll know if the bad stuff starts to outweigh the good stuff.

I think I’ll need a few beers down me on Sunday afternoon before & after we (Wigan!) play a bit part in the final game at Highbury - recommend any good places to have a few light ales anywhere in general area of the ground pre or post match Spider??

The last time we were down there back in January it was a bit hazy - something to do with a last minute winner in a semi final or other!

In nearly all the cases I defend in which violence is involved the defendandt was under the influence of alcohol, in most cases the hard stuff.
In the moment I am defending a guy who obviously beat his drinking mate to death without being able to tell why. They both had plenty of Rum before it happened.

Pre Highbury beer

Post Fri May 05, 2006 10:43 am

In the Highbury area I would go to a pub called the Woodbine. Search on http://www.fancyapint.com for details. It is a lovely little place with an excellent juke box and on Sundays they have live Irish music - just a little three piece with guitar, fiddle and accordian. I was last there a couple of weeks ago and they played a few Pogues tunes. Nice crowd there too.
