Pogues 'historical' sites in London

Post Tue Oct 05, 2004 5:50 am

We'll be attending the Brixton shows, and will spend a week or so overall in London. While we're there, what are some of the essential Pogues sightseeing spots? Former haunts and hangouts, places they played amazing shows, etc. Looking for some off-the-beaten-path tourism. Thanks!

Some of The Pogues used to live in a squat-building on Burton Street.

The cool thing is that there are tons of references to London in the Pogues songs so it is pretty easy to put together a good sight seeing tour with a map. I went to the shows in 2001 and I spent a day going to places in their songs mainly Transmetropolin. I put my pictures on my site:

These are great pictures. It's nifty to see the things mentioned in the songs.

One single request to make it better - Quote the lyric that refers to the location pictured. I'd love to have easy context for the places.
“I know all those people that were in the film [...] But that’s when they were young and strong and full of life, you know?”

I'm not completely sure, but I think I've read somewhere's that the boys used to drink in a pub called the Devonshire Arms, which is up the Kentish Town road in Camden....

Thanks, folks... some good leads (and some great photos). I'm a fan of seedy pubs, so I'm looking forward to drinking in some of the same filthy dives that the guys did during their heyday.

Keep the ideas coming!

Someone posted this on the Paddy Rolling Stone site which might be really useful for you:

Ann Scanlon [who wrote this early book on the Pogues] wrote a great little book in '97 "Those Tourists Are Money - The Rock 'n' Roll Guide to Camden" which is dearly recommended. It features all the right people - Shano (quite throughout), Suggs, The Clash (Rehearsal Rehearsals), Bal Croce (of Earls.../Stingrays fame), Gallon Drunk, Hendrix, Cave (well, a little)... the wrong - Oasis, Britpoppers galore, who ruined it, ultimately ... (once) cool places - The Good Mixer, The Devonshire Arms, The Greeks (that's the Greeks in "Broad Majestic Shannon", apparently Hell's Ditch written in there, the song, not the whole record), Rock On records, nice stories -Jim Reeves pulling a Shano "no show" at the Buffalo, later The Electric Ballroom, Led Zep buying their own bootlegs... Quite handy for tourists, too, to see what's still intact, not a lot, I fear.

Yeah, Devonshire Arms in Camden was one place, just across from what used to be TV AM! Bumped into Spider Stacey one night, Shane MacGowan on another. Got some French interview that was recorded in the pub - you can hear people playing pool in the background! Popped in for old times' sake a year or so ago - goth pub!

can't be 100% sure but i think the 'Euston Tavern ' ('Sick bed of Cuchulainn') is on Marlyebone Road opposite Euston station. From there you can get to Filthy MacNastys' in Islington which i'm led to believe has had plenty of Pogues heritage in it's time. Round the corner you can catch a train from Angel to Kings Cross to Highgate to visit Boogaloo.....

Hanway St.???

Post Fri Dec 16, 2005 2:53 am

I can't be too sure about this one, cause my memory is foggy from this one....

One night late last summer, I was onto a hefty bender at a small pub on (what I think was) Hanway Street W1 - I think it was called Bradley's Spanish Bar, or something like that....anyway, it was a great spot with a great jukebox, and I spent my last 40 pounds there within an hour or two....I think that it may have been on the same tiny street as Rock On was once on.

Can someone confirm? Mr. Chevron??

I went on a Pogues Tour of London once. I tried to find the Pindar of Wakefield which is supposed to be on Kings Cross Road, but failed.
