The Devonshire Arms, now called The Hobgoblin in Camden.

We went there when we last went to London in June last year.

Well so far my trip to London consists of nine pubs (were only there for the day). Two are Pogues related but if anyone knows of anywhere else then that would be cool? Am I right in saying that Filthy McNasty's has now closed?

Our list is thus

1) The Warrington (Maida Vale) Famous pub that appeared in episodes of the Sweeney and Minder and also has historical significance
2) The Water Rats (Pindar of Wakefield)
3) Worlds End Camden
4) Devonshire Arms Camden (which is now Hobgoblin)
5) The Blind Beggar in Whitechapel
6) The Lamb Tavern (as seen in John Wayne's movie Branagan)
7) The Old Bank of england (Fleet St)
8) The Olde Chesire Cheese (Fleet St)
9) Salisbury (Leicester Square)

Don't forget the Boogaloo, Highgate.

Pogues played a secret gig there not too long ago, and Shane - countless impromptu gigs / dj sets / photoshoots. When in London he will sooner or later be found on a stool at the bar... The pub is run by an old friend of his.

Thanks guys. I thought the boogerloo had changed to Filthy mcnasties and then closed (or reopened as a place called Meetlover). I have now added this onto the list. I may have to jib the water rats (unless anyone thinks its a good place to go)>

Not really.

At the truly ancient Old Cheshire Cheese you can do an entire pub crawl without leaving the building. There's four or five bars from the 13th century cellars up, all different

The Water Rats is good for the experience but the beer is awful and the place is quite run down.

The Water Rats used to be The Pindar of Wakefield. The Hobgoblin used to be The Devonshire Arms.

No, it was the back room of The Pindar of Wakefield according to Ann Scanlon's book The Lost Decade.

I saw Shane sing at the Water Rats / Pindar in 1997 or so. It was the launch of the Popes debut single which might have been R U lookin At Me, and he got up out of the audience for the encores. Did a song about a ship wreck if I recall, and a dog ...

Boogaloo is your best chance of a G&T with Himself

If its Pogues historical sites you're after, their very, very first gig with the chip pelting squaddies @ Cabaret Futura is now Waxy's Little Sister, Wardour Street, Soho.

It is at least an Irish Bar now (or Oirish bar). Deserves a Blue Plaque (maybe a green one). And a short walk from the Salisbury, which is a block from Leicester Sq.

Happy Drinking.

""...what would become The Pogues began life when Ollie Watts, the Chainsaws' drummer, approached Richard Strange, promoter of a trendy club called Cabaret Futura. "Ollie grabbed him by the neck and said, 'we're playing here next week, OK? We do Irish rebel songs'. Well, he didn't grab him by the neck, but he was a very demonstrative guy, shekekslesheleke.'The new band, christened The New Republicans, duly took the stage. Their set was composed of covers of traditional Irish songs. By all accounts it was a chaotic night.

MacGowan: "For some reason that night there were 15 squaddies in the audience. And they started pelting us with chips and stuff, we started pelting them back..." Stacey: "My memories are a bit of a haze."

The gig was a riot, and has entered Pogues lore. "There was about several hundred thousand people at that gig!" a chuckling Darryl Hunt would tell me the following week. Ranken: "And there was one disabled British squaddie who threw one chip!"

The New Republicans were finished as quickly as they had begun. But Jem Finer, a fellow King's Cross squatter and musician pal of MacGowan's, spotted that Stacey and MacGowan had hit on something special and persuaded them to carry on. The new band was christened Pogue Mahone and, with Finer on guitar Nips alumnus James Fearnley on accordion, the band made their debut at a King's Cross pub called The Pindar Of Wakefield in October 198.. Darryl Hunt saw them at the same venue early the following year. "I thought it was great. I really liked The Dubliners when I was little, and it reminded me of a punk Dubliners." ""

You could add The Sussex pub to your list Rich, it's on the edge of Covent Garden where Long Acre meets Upper St Martins Lane. I am sure I read in either James or Carol Clerk's book that Shane used to work behind the bar there. Incidentally it was later bombed by the IRA, I don't think that there is any connection with the former barman.
I ain't doin' no deal with the devil until he starts a loyalty card scheme.
