Make that Europe minus Britain, actually. Even on Amtrak they flinch at selling you tickets at 4 or 5 times the price of the equivalent airfare.
Haven't been to Britain since way before the rail system was sold to private interests. Thought it was fabulous in . . . 1976.
But really, N America does a poor job of its rail system. We don't like investing in any sort of infrastructure that would benefit everyone, god forbid. Only those who are well off to begin with. Trains are expensive and not reliable and fucking few and far between. Part of the problem is that the distances are so long, but also we seem to be devoted to cars, cars, cars.
