Does anyone know the story behind the Pogue Mahone logo?

I was told that it was actually a knock off of a "Blessed Virgin Mary" symbol but was not able to find any information on such a symbol.

I doubt it was an accident that it so very closely resembles this Chi-Rho symbol.

I always took it as sort of gently poking fun at christianity turning an early christian symbol into 'kiss my arse'
