Yes, Maija, you can. India has been asking for a sister a lot lately. I'll go inform her. Welcome to teh family! Now, go clean your room! :D

Yaaay! Hello India! :D

*zooms off to go and clean her room* It's a great deal, I get off with cleaning a room instead of a whole flat!

Ha, by whats on tv these days by the time i have kids all the music will be gummy bears and crazy frogs. But i got most of my taste in music from my dad, all the music i listen to now i have known my whole life, But i like the pogues and the clash way more than he does.
This thread makes me feel too young- your talking about your kids listening to the pogues, and i AM the kid listening to the pogues. I wish i was born like, 30 years earlier.

After finally getting a copy of "The Snake", I played it in the car for my daughter and told her it was one of the boys who sang the Water Song. Molly asked to see the CD cover, so I passed it back to her. Her first comment? "Daddy, he has no boobies."

I think she liked the CD, though she did try to eat the case. Better than gnawing on a Beach Boys record, I suppose.

Me too! Does this make us sad, sad people or can we put a more positive spin on it somehow?
But you make "gummy bears and crazy frogs" sound like such a bad thing, frankly they must surely be better than most of the crap in the charts currently? And although computergraphic no less real than all the plastic-surgeried clones singing this crap?
you are completely right about wishing you were born decades earlier, partly because i worry slightly that that little rant there made me sound like i was born then anyway...
maybe us young'uns should just go play with our lego?
BUT to all you parents trying to get your kids hooked on this music, we are the proof that it can be done! and i completely love it, even if it does mean i have to drag one or two of my freinds to Pogues shows against their will!

2/3 of my kids love the Pogues, the Dropkick Murphys, the Chieftans. I figure that's pretty good. One of 'em came to San Francisco in the fall and had a great time.

I think stuff sinks in if you hear it often enough under happy circumstances. When I hear Arthur Godfrey and Harry Belafonte I think of good times, though I didn't care for them then. My tastes ran to Purple People Eater when I was five. Now I really date myself.

aww bless them! how old are they?
the circumstances i heard the Pogues in probably shouldnt count as happy, my dad had an unfortunate habit of swinging me round and accidentally dropping me at high speed
yeah, there's just something about hearing a song you've always known and know inside out - for me i think its a Pair of Brown Eyes - that just makes you smile. well, smile or blush with shame depending on wether it's the Chieftan's or ABBA

LOL I'm a big fan of lego, but really, I wouldn't want you to confine your activities to that. You'd miss out on a lot of fun.

Perhaps my opinion is that musical tastes can be encouraged but not dictated?

My kids are 29, 26 and 17.

Rare is the Medusan who doesn't occasionally rant about something.

 a positive endangered species I'd say, why there are no campaigns on TV to save the non-ranting Medusan i will never know
lol ok then i withdraw my "aww bless them!" and replace it with a respectful "good for them" as they are officially to old for that response!
yeah i'd say thats probably about right. my mum tried to force my sister to like Prince (surely there must be a law against this?) and my sister promptly became a fan of Avril Lavigne - trying to force your kids to like certain music can clearly have serious consequences!
lol nah lego can provide all entartainment, i could maybe build scale replicas of the members of the Pogues (the Legogues?)

My (soon to be) 9 year old son got hooked on Depeche Mode when he was six from hearing "Enjoy the Silence." I'm a big fan (please don't throw things at me) and got their reissues as they came out, giving him the old CDs. He then segued to Yaz and Erasure following Vince Clarke. He also likes Kraftwerk, Tears for Fears, the Cars and Basement Jaxx. Not too fond of the Pogues, sadly, but maybe later...

I took him to see DM on the last tour in Dec '05. He loved it.

You know, Lego is pretty wonderful, but how good are Lego accoustics? I wonder about that. I still think you need to look a bit beyond Lego, but maybe that's because I'm a girl.

Sorry, I think the name Legomahones works better: a nod to their old name.

Surely there must be a special Lego set for building models of The Pogues? If not, there surely should be...

Ah, it's a sad day when one's kids decide they're too old to play with Lego any more.

Doktor, one of my kids (though rather older than yours) is also a big DM fan. Her interest was first sparked by a story about a strange meeting I had with them back in Essex many years ago. We went to see them on tour in '06, and it was one of the best gigs ever.

  maybe we just spotted a gap in the market? a Pogues edition with special broken yellow squares to represent a certain Mr MacGowan's teeth? and as for lego acoustics, well, surely there is only one way to find out? all in favour of building the Legomahones? and dont cry Firehazard, never too old for lego.
and sandyfromvancouver, i'm also a girl , just for the record!
Doktor I'm sure your son will come round to the Pogues in the end, how could anyone not?
