Good to see The Dubliners get a mention!!!

This was the 1st Pogue song I heard so has a special place in my heart...plus it's an excellent song.

dirty old town recording question

Post Tue Nov 08, 2005 5:23 pm

i need to obtain that "snare" sound.
has anyone read any details about the actually recording of this song, and what it actually is?
it could just be two sticks hit together, with some echo or affect. but...i've tried a lot of things and nothing seems to fit it.
anyone? i know it's a strange question.

Don't really understand what you're asking but is it the snare drum? Because those sound like rimshots to me

yea...where the standard snare sound SHOULD be. i tried rimshots, though. i know a lot of bands, when they re-issue stuff, they detail really small things about the track. and i was wondering if anyone had read anything. (or if anyone from the band remembered) that's ok, too.

the closest i've gotten is my "stick juggler" in a song, when people clap hands, they're always like...1/32nd off time. and it's about 10 sticks arranged and slightly slightly seperate intervals, so when it hits. it sounds like 10 sticks trying to hit at the same time. but human error. but i'm only one human. with NO error. ever. ever. follow?

hmm... maybe i'll try a few more effects with a rimshot.

i think it is just regular cross-sticking with maybe the other end of the drumstick and reverb..with loose snares. No I'm not a complete geek, but that's what it sounds like to me.

yea, i was hoping no one would point that out. it's obviously what he HIS doing. and obvious, to me, only now... but i cannot get it. my "sticks" is the closest i've gotten.

so, thanks for the help.
now... how big his his bass drum in the fairytale video!?

Instrument in Brixton "Dirty Old Town"

Post Fri Mar 30, 2007 4:13 am

Apologies if it's been discussed before, but can someone tell me what that cool sounding instrument is in the "solo" of "Dirty Old Town" on the Brixton CD, and who plays it? I don't recall hearing that particular part in Boston or New York this month.

Any help on this would be great. Thanks!
