Dirty old town analysis

Post Sat Apr 09, 2005 9:13 pm

what a weird song....

never heard the original, has anyone? the original songwriter picked strange words to hit the notes on. the hard note being "dreamed a DREEEEAAAM"
and they're especially hard for Shane who never really cared to pronounce words correctly, but...look at the words!

dreeeeam! driiiiiiiiiiifting proooowwwling! saw a traaaaaain (which sounds like an L sound..trainlllllllllllll) and steal....stee-uuuuuuuhl.

it seems to make the notes harder to it.

on a side note "arse over tits" what a great line.

All I know about the song is it's originaly an english folk song written by ewan mccall (Kirsty's dad), He didn't like the pogues version at first. Luke Kelly is one of about 1000 Irish bands to sing it. I've only heard the pogues and luke kellys version to be honset.

Dirty Old Town is a tough sing, but that's not actually the fault of the lyrics. Ask any opera singer - long notes and high notes are always easier on vowel sounds, something that all experienced lyricists get instinctvely. If, say, a Stephen Sondheim places a consonant on a tough note, it could only ever be for a deliberate effect, an intended moment of discomfort.

Greetings from New york, where Pogue fan Marti n McDonagh's play The Pillowman opens on Broadway tomorrrow night.n

I like Luke Kelly's version as well.

We play it in a different key by the way so I can sing the notes. Makes it much easier for me.

But the song is my all-time favourite to play.
