A Pogues Song for Every Occasion

Post Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:44 pm

The Guardian recently listed a 1000 songs everyone must hear (14/03/2009 - 20/03/2009). They divided them into the following subject areas Love, Heartbreak, People and Places, Sex, Protest and Politics, Life and Death and Party Songs. Thought it could be interesting for people to give their opinions on their favourite Pogues song for each of these areas. For starters here are mine:

Love: Rainy Night In Soho,
Heartbreak: Shanne Bradley,
People and Places: The Broad Majestic Shannon,
Sex: Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah, Yeah,
Protest and Politics: Murder,
Life and Death: Down In The Ground Where The Dead Men Go,
Party Songs: Repeal Of The Licensing Laws (was tempted by Glued Up and Speeding)

Hi Charlie, great article indeed. There's already a thread for this in "In The Media".

I'd say your about to get merged..... hold on tight it could get rough!

I thought that Fiesta would be a popular choice for the party one. Its one of my least fovourite Pogues tracks, it kind of grates on me a bit. I was very close to sticking in Streams Of Whiskey though.

To me "Streets of sorrow" / "Birmingham Six" would have been the obvious choice in the category "Protest and politics".

And for "Life and death" I´d have chosen "The sick bed of Cu Chulainn", but "Down in the ground" is okay.

I think the categories are too limited when it comes to this band -- shouldn't we also include:

pissup: Streams of Whiskey
best cover (of all time): Dirty Old Town
trad: Kitty
original session: Planxty Noel Hill / Dingle Regatta
Christmas song: Fairytale of New York
Canta, no llore.

Ok, for the new categories I will give you:

Pissup: Boat Train (Demo version off Just Look Them Straight In The Eye And Say....Pogue Mahone (Disc 4))
Best Cover (of all time): North Sea Holes
Trad: Kitty (will give you that one!)
Original Session: Maidran Rua (Long Version off Just Look Them Straight In The Eye And Say....Pogue Mahone (Disc 4))
Christmas Song: Tuesday Morning (Purely on the basis that I love hearing it live every Christmas.)

p.s anyone know who coughs at the beginning of Maidran Rua and also who shouts in it, my best guess is Spider?

Pogue Mahone and The North London Invaders on the same bill, fanatstic please don't rain!!!
