I guess the song always brings me to tears is Skyline Pigeon (E. John). It reminds me of my sister who died suddenly at 31 from a brain aneurysm. :(

I'm also kind of a sap for Danny Boy and The Town I Loved So Well.

Bright Eyes
Puppy Love

Both cause I was about 4-8 yrs old when they were released.

Everybody hurts by REM because they played it after the one minute silence for the Dunblane Massacre 4 days after it happened. The kids killed at school were only 5ish years old - my first was 4 months old at the time but trying to imagne waking up without him was and is unbearable. I still cry just thinking about the day I heard about the bastard who did it and I am now 35 years old.

Fuckers.....why is it legal to have guns when things like that can happen?

"Danny Boy" has been mentioned quite a few times. There's a Maine singer-songwriter named Carol Noonan who performed it on NPR a week or two back - she does a narrative intro, talking about her history with the song and having to sing it at her father's funeral, which is funny, sweet and, darn it all, it made me cry when I heard it. I think the intro was edited a bit, but most of it is still listenable online for anyone interested:

"Thousands Are Sailing" ALWAYS chokes me up - as well as "Fairytale of New York" - I was quite surprised that I didn't openly weep at all at Sunday's show, although both of those produced a lump in my throat - I was just so damned happy!

A song like "Danny Boy" is SUPPOSED to make you cry, it's almost a cliche. But in '03 I lost a dear lifelong friend and musical mentor who loved his Irish heritage and called himself Danny Boy Brown - the timing of his unexpected death was such that we had his wake on St. Patrick's Day, and although the occasion had much joy, when that song played we all joined arms and wept like babies.

The longer life goes on the more songs make me cry.

Amen to that. With 'Danny Boy' I swear there's something in the cadences, the particular intervals, the flow of the tune that resonates both physically and emotionally (and, some may say, spiritually) within both the singer and hearer.
The lyrics (Fred. P. 'Roses Of Picardy' Wetherby) are maudlin but beautiful, and contain much personal significance for millions worldwide, many not even from English (or Irish) speaking backgrounds.
It was the first song I ever sang in public, at an Eisteddfodd, aged 5 or so. When I can still reach it, on a good night..... *ahhh*

The Joe Strummer/Johnny Cash version of Redemption Song. It's even better if it has the rap that Joe does beforehand in the video.

Parts of "White Girl" by X really get me. Exene can sound so plaintive sometimes.

Fairytale got me pretty worked up last week.
