I dont know if this has been discussed but i have had a mooch and couldnt come up with anything. Does anyone know what the last thing the guys recorded with Shane was?? I have a feeling after reading through the box set notes that it could be Donnegal Express and Travelling People???

Yes, I think that's right, though I'm more than willing to be corrected if I'm mistaken.

I know it's been said that Garbo was recorded in 1990, but there was a thread on ShaneMacGowan.com a while back when Danny 'Pope' Heatley said he played drums on it and it was recorded round about July 1991, when he was deputising for Andrew.

This is perfectly possible too. Like Andrew (if true) I too was absent from this session, for reasons I cannot recall. The Internet Movie Database (imdb) puts the release date of the movie Garbo at 1992, so July 1991 is probably the more plausible date. Besides, I'm sure Danny knows if he was there or not, and Kilmichael is now the acknowledged Pogues' sessions authority!

Since myself and Andrew are not involved in "Garbo", arguably "Donegal Express" and "Freeborn Man of the Travelling People" still hold good as the last "classic" Pogues recording featuring Shane

Well, according to http://www.shanemacgowan.de/Discography ... demos.html "Express" & "Freeborn" were recorded in June 1991, while Danny deputised for Andrew at a number of gigs from about 9-15 July 1991, so I figured Garbo was recorded around about that time, either just before or after the Pogues were in Italy. But of course, bearing in mind Philip's comments above, 'Express' and 'Freeborn' would indeed be the last tracks to feature the full 'classic' line-up.

And as to being the "acknowledged Pogues' sessions authority"?! Talk about blushing... I might get that on a t-shirt, actually!

Without ever looking at recording dates I always had (or wanted to have) the impression that "Squid out of water" was the last recorded song/tune. This would have been particularly great as everyone presented his instrument in a short solo, as if the band would say "well now, this is The Pogues, this WAS the Pogues, goodbye". I always liked the idea of a proper "swan song".

I know what you mean. I always liked to think of the 1991 version of A Riany Night In Soho as the Pogues "swan song". IMHO the best version of the best song they ever did.
