And for more collaborations by Mr Woods and Kavana, watch out for "The Bucks - Dancin' to the ceili band" and Ron's "Home Fire" album.

Cheers Alex,
I've got the Bucks album- great CD. I've never seen any Ron Kavana stuff on CD- do you know anywhere online that has his music?

I think Young Ned of the Hill sounds great just the way it is. I mean I enjoy the dub mix of the song, but nothing beats the original version that appears on Peace and Love.

keep an eye on ebay, (that's where I got mine pretty cheap). Or try Amazon, they also sell used stuff there.

The version by Ron Kavana (with Terry Woods on co-vocals) on "Home Fire" is not at all bad. The lyrics are a tad different and the first part of the song slow as syrup, but all else is fine :-)

@Alex: so much shopping to do, so little money :(

Everyman Is A King

Post Fri Apr 07, 2006 6:34 pm

This delightful Terry Woods/Ron Kavana track concerning the Cold War politics between the United States and the former Soviet Union, hold a special place in my heart. First off, I have a bachelor's degree in history, and I mostly studied World War Two and Cold War era politics ( they had no Irish politics at Old Dominion University), so most of the lyrics in this song, I identified with because I studied most of the topics. Back, to the song, I think it is one of the Pogues most unknown tracks, being that it is only available on the new remastered Peace and Love, however I think that this song should have been on the original Peace and Love album.

Mr. Chevron and others I'm curious about the line-up of instruments of this track, which I mean who played which one?

I honestly can't remember, and I don't have a copy here in the studio in Westmeath {recording Radiators album} to refer to. But I have no reason to believe it was anything other than a quite standard orchestration.

"Everyman Is A King" is my favorite of Terry's songs, which is high praise indeed. I love everything about that one -- I think it's Terry's best vocal, the lyrics are perfect, and the band has never sounded better. I especially love Andrew's drumming.

But my favorite thing about this song is the harmony vocals on the choruses -- I love the way they sort of build and get bigger and grander each time around. And I think I say this every time this song comes up, but I really adore the way the vocals on the line "Everyman is a king in the U.S. of A" come in a bit earlier on the 2nd chorus than on the 1st, 3rd and 4th. On the three other choruses there's a pause preceding that line: "If you've got the guts and the bucks it is said <beat> Everyman is a king in the US of A," but on the 2nd chorus there's not. I think it's less than a half a second's difference but it's a really nice touch.

In my book it's one of the best songs the Pogues ever did. If there's a stronger A-side/B-side combo than "White City"/"Everyman Is A King" anywhere in the Pogues discography, I don't know what it is. It's a shame it didn't make the album the first time around, but I'm glad it earned a spot on the reissue because it's really an amazing track.
