Hi,

Do you prefer P+L or Hell's Ditch? I just ask because they seem to be the two most underrated Pogues albums, even completely disliked by some Pogues fans. Personally, I don't really understand why, as I find them really good. Sure they are not as good as their first three CDs but in all the world, find an album that is. So I wanted to know your opinion about those two albums.

These two albums are each other's yin and yan and are best appreciated as a pair.

Maybe. But there are some magnificent songs on both albums. God what were you thinking when you wrote Lorelei. Beautiful piece of art.

I do really love Hell's Ditch. Went to a Paddy's day concert in Berlin, and - sadly - I most enjoyed the fact that they were playing Hell's Ditch on repeat before and after the concert...

@philipchevron: Strange you should say that; on my way home after said evening, not too sober, I was just pondering about something along those lines.

I said it before, but I feel that White City and Rain Street both deserve merit with the songs from the first three albums. Sure, maybe not as great as the songs first three, but just as good.

each album is unique in its own way

Peace and Love is my 2nd favorite Pogues album after If I Should Fall. I listen to it a lot, especially since I got the remastered version with the bonus tracks (I actually like "Everyman Is a King" and "Train of Love" better than most of the tracks that made the album!). After "Fairytale of New York," which is in such a league of its own that it's hard to compare it to anything, "White City" is my all-time favorite Pogues song. I also love "Misty Morning, Albert Bridge," "Lorelei," "London You're a Lady," and (gasp) "Blue Heaven."

It's been a while since I've listened to anything from Hell's Ditch other than "The Sunnyside of the Street," but I really ought to dig it out and give it a listen sometime soon. I remember liking it a lot at the time, but I've never loved it the way I do its two predecessors.

in my book bouth albums are amazing. maybe not so many classic song on them but there are songs there that just grows and grows even after 15 years i find new things about them songs like ghost of a smile,5 green queens,sayonara,sunnyside,lorlei,misty morning,london you are a lady,night train to lorca they just gets bether with the years

i haven't heard all of either one. but rain street, white city, and down all the days are a few of my favorite pogues songs.

ahh, both happen to be my least favourite albums with Shane, but if I had to choose between the two, I'd go with Hell's Ditch for sure.

I find the re-mastered versions of both are much better.
On Peac & Love I like 'Star of the county Down' The 'Limrick Rake' and on Hell's Ditch I think the pogues and the dubliners version of 'Whiskey In The Jar' is certainly as good as 'The Irish Rover'

Hell's Ditch got Sunnyside of the Street and Summer in Siam. Those two songs worth the price of the CD alone.

By the way, do the Dubliners still exist? Do they still make records?

I think they play once in a while like the pogues do.

I really wouldn’t object if the Pogues played with a similar "once in a while" frequency as the Dubliners do. Check the list of their tourdates from the past few years at their website.
