The live album is 77 minutes and 48 seconds long. A CD can accomodate a maximum of 80 minutes. Even editing down the between song banter, applause etc, it was tough to get 22 tracks on. Other fans have actually complained about there being too LITTLE chatter but any more would have reduced the tally further.
The challenge with a live CD these days is to convey as much of the music as possible without substantially sacrificing the atmosphere. Nick Robbins presented us with numerous options as the mixing work progressed - I personally listened to 12 separate variations on the album. Myself, Spider or Jem were in constant telephone contact with Nick. In addition, Darryl, Jem and Spider all visited Nick in the studio.
"White City", "The Parting Glass", "Medley" and "Star Of The County Down" were all contenders at some point. "Broad Majestic Shannon" and "Repeal Of The Licensing Laws" made it to the running order quite late in the process.
Yes, we could have done a double CD, but our instincts were against that and Warners were not interested anyway. I guarantee if we had done a double, there would have been people posting on here or on PRS accusing us of "exploitation" again!!
In answer to a question elsewhere, there are NO overdubs on "Live At The Brixton Academy". There is an edit on "Rain Street" and a tiny edit on "Fairytale of New York".
