philipchevron wrote:The "boxer" musical, Jack Rooney In Person remains a long-term project. I have not abandoned it, but it keeps getting shunted aside for other projects. One song from the show, "Manhattan Moon", sung by Kirsty, appeared on her posthumous From Croydon to Cuba box set and another, Ronnie Drew's version of "Chasing Enchantment", may yet see the light of day if his Estate gives the go-ahead. I am currently involved in development theatre projects in New York, Galway and Alabama, but none of these, at the moment, is Jack Rooney In Person

Fingers crossed we get to hear Ronnie Drew's song. "Manhattan Moon" makes a nice parallel to "Thousands are Sailing"; I wonder if your boxer would have embraced his new home as determinedly as the protagonist in that song. Kirsty's entire box set should be listened to more often, it's brilliant.

It's very intriguing that you're doing these theatre projects; I do hope you'll let us know details in due course. And that some lucky Medusans get to see the results.

And then there'll be the box set containing the songs that didn't get into the box set containing the songs that got left off the original box set. Looking forward to that one...

I think I can safely say there will be no more box sets now. None in my lifetime anyway. None that require my involvement.

I don't think I've missed anything, if so let me know.
If this could be released properly even if on MP3 or CDR sold legally through the website it will save the bootleggers making a fortune (like the one on Ebay who isn't selling the 'Rare Tracks' 3 CDR set anymore since the box-set's release!)
Most of these tracks are floating around, so round 'em up and release them please!

Cheers. (Roll on Bristol Academy) :D

The only track I know of that isn't included in your list is the full length version of the 1991 remix of A Rainy Night In Soho, released (in the UK at least) on the 12" single and, imho, a surprising omission from the box set. This is as opposed to the edited version released on the 7" single and, as far as I know, every CD release to feature the 1991 remix, e.g. the remastered version of Hell's Ditch.

I did of course consider the 12" version for the box, but I was unable to decide which of Lillywhite's extended mixes to use - he did several, with and without oboe, with and without flugelhorn etc. After several hours trapped in this madness, I started to imagine versions with and without the kitchen sink, at which point I gave up and took the decision that the widely unavailable 1986 oboe mix was "Rainy Night" enough for one box set.

I'd been here before. There were literally dozens of mixes of the Radiators' 1980 single "The Dancing Years" but, as almost ALL of the tape boxes are labelled "MASTER" or even "POSITIVELY DEFINITELY AND UNEQUIVOCALLY THE FINAL MASTER!!!!" (it wasn't), when it came to compile it on the Rads' Best Of, Cockles And Mussels, in 1995, I abandoned the fruitless search for the actual master and substituted an "alternative mix" I rather liked (it is so designated in the credits, btw) and which, in a parallel universe, was the massive international hit "The Dancing Years" was intended to be.

David The Man Behind The Wire Simon shares your enthusiasm for "Faithful Departed", by the way.

Well, I would have loved to hear Shane or Spider wrap their tonsils around "Kitty Ricketts" as well.

Instead you got Cait O'Riordan who, all too briefly, made it her own.

She did sang that when she was in the Radiators Plan 9. You can find it on "The Television Screen 2004 EP".

The "serious" outtakes from Straight In The Eye already occupy two discs.

May I just add my voice of protest to those of the Medusans protesting the over-enthusiastic combining and splitting of threads. This exchange is meaningless without its original context.

Kilmichael - I think you've ommited Spider's 'spirited' rendition of Redemption Song, which I think was on the Hell's Ditch Falconer Demos. Best left ommited mind you, but I thought I'd mention it

I'm not sure what context is missing from the exchange (it's very possible things were in mid-shuffle when you posted this, and that the context materialized after or during the time you posted). If there's something missing from this topic that should be a part of it, can you point me at it?

On the overall topic of Merging & Splitting, the other Janitors and I are having a conversation to see what can be done to strike a balance that seems less draconian, increases accountability, and makes it easier to recognize when a split or move has happened and follow the information off to its new home. One of us will surely speak up if we get good results from our discussion.

OK, it's no big thing, but it can be puzzling when one is just idly flicking through. In order for David Simon to share the poster's enthusiasm for "Faithful Departed", the post expressing the original enthusiasm should, by rights, have survived the rejig.
