Unfortunately(?) The Buck's version is the only of that I know, and is one of my favorite tracks on the album.

You could try Water From the Well by the Chieftains - they do a nice version of the song too. And it is overall a great album. :)

I've thought about it with Phil's reasoning, and it all seems to make sense. Afterall, I love the Pogues, but have yet to hear any of Fearnley's solo stuff....

At the risk of coming off as obssessed or personally and eternally offended by Philips remarks regarding the lack of engagement among band members, I can't hold back from commenting on the above quote. Loving the Pogues and being a Pogue is a completely seperate existence. It's only my opinion, but an outsider's degree of familiarity with the individual solo work is negligible, whereas a deliberate display of disinterest within the group should be called to question. When the Pogues come back to the USA, I'm going to present each and every one of them with a "greatest hits mix" of the others' music. And, you'll have me to thank for their awakening and the new Pogues album that the exposure inspires! Maybe world peace will come about it, too. HA!

Great idea! Especially the world peace part.

And hope there's some soul left to save

I would have to question your suggestion of "a deliberate display of disinterest". On the contrary, all the extra-curricular Pogues stuff goes on the Must Listen pile along with the other dozen or so free CDs one picks up almost as a matter of course in a week as a working musician. Whether they ever make it off the pile and into the CD player is an element governed by any number of factors. Willingness is never in question.

If Mr. Chevron would indulge me, I would like to throw a question out to discuss.

If say, for example, August 7, 1989 Mr. Chevron writes a great song. Is he under a moral or contractual (either to the Pogues or to their record label) obligation to turn it over to the Pogues or can he say "Jeez, this would be a great Pogues song, but I would rather save it for my solo album." (Of course he would say it alot more eloquently!). How does that work?
Thank you.

Philip- (warning, this is a very pointed email.) But as always, thanks for the response and especially the sentiment. Good to know the lack of interest is non-deliberate. Be that as it may, I said/wrote it before and I'll say/write it again, I challenge each and every one of you (the Pogues) to 100% fully support one another's craft/livelihood/artistry/passion/fruits of labor by taking the 80 minutes or less and giving a proper listen to the brain childs of your good mates' endeavors. For example, obviously I can't speak for your bandmates, but I'm gonna go out on a limb here and play unsolicited dime store psychologist ... no musical rags' review or record unit sales / Billboard charting could possibly be more significant and meaningful than receiving honest feedback, or just plain acknowledgment of just one complete listen, from the author of such classics as "Thousands Are Sailing" and "Faithfully Departed," and that same guy that stands in tow and sings along to the chorus to "Streams of Whiskey" in concert. Of course, I'm not suggesting you call an emergency band meeting, but... Take a chance. Life's too short. 50,000,000 Pogues fans can't be wrong. It'd be a shame if you never got the chance to hear "Crock of Gold" as brilliant, or mediocre, or trite as you may perceive it to be, or if Andrew never got to hear "Trouble Pilgrim." Which reminds me, I hope you at least listened to my lp I sent to you!!!!!! Or is it in a pile sandwiched between "The Snake" and Bish? Hey- last thing I'm gonna write on the topic- "lend me ten pounds and I'll buy you a beer." Think about it; think about how that magnificent line applies to this dialogue. (Humility. Commradery. Brotherhood. Summer In Siam. And we go through many changes.)

The longer this goes on, the more absurd it gets.

Anyway, as much as I'd love to hear a new IISFFGWG type album from The Pogues, I've read enough of Phils messages to understand that this likely will not happen (any album of all new material, whatever it should sound like). On the other hand, considering the quality of their renditions of folk standards such as Muirshin Durkin/Parting Glass/Leaving of Liverpool, etc., and their own instrumentals (really, pick any one), I'd encourage an all-new album of standards and original instrumentals.

They could all grow beards, wear those heavy white cable knit(?) sweaters and call themselves the Pogue Mahone Irish Showband or something equally as clever. They're all about old now enough to pull it off eh?

Why should they need tocontinue to play their old stuff over and over again. Why not the odd cover tune or newly revised standard throwen into the mix? (yes, I did read Phil's posts about the rigours of rehearsals, and the having to learn the old stuff all over again...).

And anyway, the Crock Of Gold album. I'm sure many of you'd dissagree, and maybe I just never payed enough attention to the lyrics, but IMO, it's a terrible album for the most part. I dunno, maybe I gotta listen to it again.

meh,

Isn't it ENTIRELY up to each individual - even those in the same band - to decide what music they listen to?!
Bono: "Every time I click my fingers a child dies."
Audience member: "Stop fucking doing it then!"

Entirely. Absolutely.
No argument here.
This diatribe of mine has merely been a humble attempt to foster the achievements of the band that I profoundly admire.

I don't understand why this discussion is occurring when we could be talking about how the David Jensen BBC recording of "Boys from the County Hell" is the roughest, most brutal song included in the box set.

GregM-

WELCOME TO THE BOARD!!!!!!!!!!!
You poor soul. So conflicted: irritated by the lingering dialogue, yet compelled to contribute and perpetuate.
I almost feel partly responsible.
If you wanna disguss the BBC recording of the "Boys frm the County Hell" from the box set, go to:
WARNERS/RHINO POGUES BOX SET DUE June, 2008 Topic/Thread
Talk your heart out!!!!!
Again- welcome.

Thanks for the welcome. Actually though, I've been posting here for a while, but under a different name. I felt it was time for a change.
I realize that there is a thread dedicated to the box set, but this one really needed some perspective.
