In and Out

Post Sat Jun 21, 2008 11:25 am

Garbo (aka In And Out)
(1990, from the movie and soundtrack release of Garbo)
[S. MacGowan / J. Finer]

Saint-Tropez in the golden days of the gorgeous Brigitte Bardot
Heaven's night is burning bright at the gates of El Dorado
I tasted sin among the bins down at Alvorado,
Melbourne's sweet, the sunny streets, the beauty of the garbo

In and Out
Catch me if you can
All the lovely sheilas love the garbo man

By the crack of dawn, as the day is born and the world is all aslumber
And amidst the dreams and unborn schemes and the rolls of distant thunder
If you should stir, you'll hear a word that will fill your heart with wonder,
As the garbo trucks take away the muck of last night's puke and chunder

In and Out
Catch me if you can
All the lovely sheilas love the garbo man

Follow me among the shit me boys stinking all and rough,
They'll never dump anything useful but they surely dump enough
I got me end away me boys a couple of times last night
But now I'm on the truck once more, I'm head to toe in shite,
I'm shitfaced and I'm stoned, I want to be alone,
But all the lovely Sheilas love a garbo man

In and Out
Catch me if you can
All the lovely sheilas love the garbo man

In and Out
Catch me if you can
All the lovely sheilas love the garbo man

Edit: Thanks Jay!

Pinned Down

Post Sat Jun 21, 2008 11:49 am

Pinned Down / I'm Alone In The Wilderness
(1990, outtake from the Hell's Ditch album sessions, previously unreleased)
[S. MacGowan] / [J. Hill]

(I'm alone in the wilderness...)

Fucked Up
Set up
Faced up
Jacked up
Sitting there in chokey
14 years old

No lock on the door
But no way out
No joking
No hoping
No nothing
Pinned Down.

(I'm alone in the wilderness...)

Fat greasy shrinks
Complacent bastards
Got no reason
For the things
They ask you
Put away in a hole
Till you're ready
For jail and the dole
Take away your soul
Pinned Down.

(I'm alone in the wilderness...)

Wake up
and your heart's not beating
Try to say something
But they got you beaten
You try to take it
Away from them
Once, and twice
And then again and
Again and again, again.
Jump out of the window
Slash your wrists
When all you really wanted
Was to screw and get pissed.
And the sky goes black
But you can't go back
And the way ahead just leads to
The Chandler Clinic.
And there's nothing in there
Except madness and despair

(I'm alone in the wilderness...)

Dehydration
Humiliation
Degradation
Mind castration
And the sky is black
And the one next to you
Keeps thinking they're having a heart attack.

(I'm alone in the wilderness...)

Desolation
On medication
Nurse nurse nurse
can't sleep easy
Nurse nurse nurse
are you fucking with me
ECT fuckin' did a thing on me
ECT did a job on me
ECT did a job on me
ECT did a job on me.
Pinned Down
Pinned Down.

(I'm alone in the wilderness...)
Pinned Down.
(I'm alone in the wilderness...)
Pinned Down.

FUCK!

Re: The missing lyrics for the Box Set

Thank you, Alex. You must be finished with school?

"By the crack of dawn, as the day is born and the world is all aslumber

If you should stir, you'll hear a word that will fill your heart with wonder,
As the garbo trucks take away the muck of last night's puke and chunder
"

had me laughing out loud. In case anyone is wondering, "garbo" is a "garbage man", here in the States, anyway.

Another reference source for Pogues lyrics is The Parting Glass site, http://www.poguetry.com/

Miss Otis Regrets/Just One Of Those Things

Post Sun Jun 22, 2008 6:18 am

Miss Otis Regrets/Just One Of Those Things
(from the Red Hot And Blue multi-artist album, 1990)
The Pogues and Kirsty MacColl
[C. Porter]

Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today.
Madam,
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today.
She is sorry to be delayed,
but last evening down in Lover's Lane she strayed,
Madam,
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today.

When she woke up and found
That her dream of love was gone,
Madam,
She ran to the man
Who had led her so far astray,
And from under her velvet gown
She drew a gun and shot her lover down,
Madam,
Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today.

When the mob came and got her
And dragged her from the jail,
Madam,
They strung her upon
The old willow across the way,
And the moment before she died
She lifted up her lovely head and cried,
Madam,
"Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today."
"Miss Otis regrets she's unable to lunch today."

It was just one of those things,
Just one of those crazy flings,
One of those bells that now and then rings,

Just one of those things.
It was just one of those nights,
Just one of those fabulous flights,
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings,
Just one of those things.

If we'd thought a bit
Of the end of it,
When we started painting the town,
We'd have been aware
That our love affair
Was too hot not to cool down.

So goodbye, Dear, and Amen.
Here's hoping we meet now and then,
It was great fun,
But it was just one of those things.

It was just one of those nights,
Just one of those fabulous flights,
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings,
Just one of those things.

So goodbye, Dear, and Amen.
Here's hoping we meet now and then,
It was great fun,
But it was just one of those
It was great fun,
But it was just one of those
It was great fun,
But it was just one of those things.

All The Tears That I Cried

Post Sun Jun 22, 2008 6:21 am

All The Tears That I Cried
(from the CD single My Affair, 1991)
Kirsty MacColl
[K. MacColl / M. E. Nevin]

Sometimes it's hard to remember you lied
And memory fades as the years pass you by
Sometimes the truth's got up, lay down and died
But I can't forget all the tears that I cried

Sometimes I try to pretend it's alright
The promises I make last nearly all night
Still in the morning I run and I hide
'Cos I can't forget all the tears that I cried

But I'll get fooled like the last time
Oh how these eyes are sore
They'll cry again just like before

Lonely the track I decided to take
Lost from the start all the friendships I make
Single fares only the trails only I ride
'Cos I can't forget all the tears that I cried

Too much reminiscing is bad for the soul
It screws up your life and it makes you feel old
Don't want to remember what I can't abide
'Cos I can't forget all the tears that I cried

But I'll get fooled like the last time
Oh how these eyes are sore
They'll cry again just like before

I find it so hard just to make up my mind
You've all been so patient and all been so kind
But when it comes to emotions my outbursts are tied
'Cos I can't forget all the tears that I cried

But I'll get fooled like the last time
Oh how these eyes are sore
They'll cry again just like before

'Cos I can't forget all the tears
I can't forget all the tears
I can't forget all the tears
I can't forget all the tears
I can't forget all the tears

The One And Only

Post Sun Jun 22, 2008 6:23 am

The One And Only
(from the album Electric Landlady, 1991) (d)
Kirsty MacColl
[K. MacColl / M. E. Nevin]

Sometimes it feels like you will never win
Just when you're ready to pack it all in
You tear it all down and start over again
But I'm not down for the first time
Maybe I'll always be the one and only girl for me

I never minded the rain on my face
I knew the sun lived in some other place
I had to go I just needed the space
But I'm not down for the first time
Maybe I'll always be the one and only girl for me

Sometimes your life isn't going too well
Sometimes it reads like a postcard from hell
I've made my mistakes, I suppose you can tell
Some lives read like a postcard
And some lives read like a book
I'll be happy if mine
Doesn't read like a joke from an old Christmas cracker

Call My Name

Post Sun Jun 22, 2008 6:48 am

Call My Name
(outtake from Pogue Mahone album, 1995, previously unreleased)
[D. Hunt]

World goes down and I'm on my knees
[A sign of hope is not released]
Silent enemies at the dark side gates
[?] and I'm still in your dreams

Chorus:
And I love to see you call my
love the way you make me smile.
love to see you call my way
Yes, I love to see you call my
want the world to make you smile
love to hear you call my name

The sun went down and moon shine go
sheding light on a dead man [?]
The city was asleeping and the carnival began
[?] judges ropes.

2x Chorus

My love [?]
rings on fingers and silver in your hair
and all you were was a dream I had
my imagination stuck me a bit inside.

3x Chorus

So ???? and say fuck all

After repeated listenings over the weekend, I'm pretty sure this line is:
"So thanks for sweet fuck all"

(but I'm not sure about the following line... just doesn't seem to fit right. Maybe "Once more to the North Wall" -- because he's imagining going back to Ireland?)

With a catch of a hundred cran.

I think what's sung here is:
"It's off with a boiler full of steam and your engine spic and span
To fish the grounds the North Sea round
And try your luck at the North Sea Holes
And try your luck at the North Shields Gut.

With a catch of a hundred cran."

Alex wrote:And steam ahead for the curing shed

"And steam ahead for the curing shed
...on the Yarmouth quay."

A little bit different, in each case, from Ewan MacColl's version, I think.
Likes the warm feeling but is tired of all the dehydration.

Excellent job with all the lyrics Alex, well done. You can find the (not exact) lyrics to the first verse of Pinned Down on page 82 in "A Drink with Shane MacGowan" so this is what it should be:

Fucked Up
Set up
Faced up
Jacked up
Sitting there in chokey
14 years old

No lock on the door
But no way out
No joking
No hoping
No nothing
Pinned Down.

Got A Lot Of Livin' To Do

Post Mon Jun 23, 2008 7:52 am

Got A Lot Of Livin' To Do
(1990, from the NME multi-artist charity compilation, The Last Temptation Of Elvis) (d)
[A. Schroeder / B. Weisman]
Produced by David Jordan

Oh yes I`ve got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
Come on baby, to make a party takes two
Oh yes I`ve got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
And there`s no one who I`d rather do it with-a than you

There`s a moon that`s big and bright in the milky way tonight
But the way you act you never would know it`s there
So baby, time`s a wasting
A lot of kisses I ain`t been tasting
I don`t know about you but I`m gonna get my share

Oh got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
Come on baby, to make a party takes two
Oh yes I`ve got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
And there`s no one who I`d rather do it with-a than you

There`s a balmy little breeze
That`s whistling through the trees
And it`s telling you to pitch a little woo with me
Why don`t you take a listen
You`ll never know what you`ve been missing
Cuddle up a little closer and be my little honey bee

Oh got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
Come on baby, to make a party takes two
Oh yes I`ve got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
And there`s no one who I`d rather do it with-a than you

You`re the prettiest thing I`ve seen
But you treat me so doggone mean
Ain`t you got no heart, I`m dying to hold you near
Why do you keep me waiting
Why don`t you start co-operating
And the things I say are things you want to hear

Oh got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
Come on baby, to make a party takes two
Oh yes I`ve got a lot o` living to do
A whole lot o` loving to do
And there`s no one who I`d rather do it with-a than you

Johnny Come Lately

Post Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:04 am

Johnny Come Lately
(1988, from the album Copperhead Road) (d)
Steve Earle
[S. Earle]
Produced by Tony Brown

I'm an American, boys, and I've come a long way
I was born and bred in the USA
So listen up close, I've get something to say
Boys, I'm buying this round
Well it took a Iittle while but we're in this fight
And we ain't going home 'til we've done what's right
We're gonna drink Camden Town dry tonight
If I have to spend my last pound
When I first got to London it was pourin' down rain
Met a Iittle girl in the field canteen
Painted her name on the nose of my plane
Six more missions I'm gone
Well I asked if I could stay and she said that I might
Then the warden came around yelling "turn out the lights"
Death rainin' out of the London night
We made love 'til dawn

But when Johnny Come Lately comes marching home
With a chest full of medals and a G.l. loan
They'll be waitin' at the station down in San Antone
When Johnny comes marching home

MY P-47 is a pretty good ship
And she took a round coming cross the Channel last trip
I was thinking 'bout my baby and letting her rip
Always got me through so far
Well they can ship me all over this great big world
But I'll never find nothing like my North End girl
I'm taking her home with me one day, sir
Soon as we win this war

But when Johnny Come Lately comes marching home
With a chest full of medals and a G.l. loan
They'll be waitin' at the station down in San Antone
When Johnny comes marching home

Now my granddaddy sang me this song
Told me about Londen when the Blitz was on
How he married Grandma and brought her back home
A hero throughout this land
Now I'm standing on a runway in San Diego
A couple Purple Hearts and I move a little slow
There's nobody here, maybe nobody knows
About a place called Vietnam

But when Johnny Come Lately comes marching home
With a chest full of medals and a G.l. loan
They'll be waitin' at the station down in San Antone
When Johnny comes marching home
The piano has been drinking, not me
